More LCA Tejas For The IAF: $5.2 Billion Deal For Mark 1A Variant To Be Signed By December,

Wonderful... finally this was cleared. First few MK1A's are already on the production floor and may be ready in no time. With HAL ramping up the production rate it will be much quicker.

But the game changer will be AMCA for me.... hope we hear some good news on that front.
Realistically 10 years before the first prototype.....but the best part is we’re getting there.

First of all, congratulations, it’s another step to make Tejas a reality. But there’s many more to take.

Firstly: According to the Indian Defence minister, if this jet was ordered in 2019, the first production would start in 2023 and the first jet would be delivered in 2025. Since it is ordered in 2021, going by the same time frame, the first one will be delivered beyond 2025.

secondly:
One Tejas costs the IAF 40+ million dollars without spares and maintenance. Which is very expensive for a light fighter that’s supposed to be indigenous. More expensive than an MKi.

thirdly:
The production capability of HAL is not 20 jets a year, in fact they are currently trying to expand it to 16 a year. Which means it’s currently lower (has been 8 so far I think)

source:

Lastly: This is the Mk1A, which is finally comparable to the current version of the thunder, the previous Tejas is quite a sub par jet for its class which is why it was mainly rejected by the IAF and the Navy. This is not anything revolutionary so far. But it’s a great jet. Besides the price.

and to the Indian members mocking the Thunder for being a Chinese jet, please note that only 59% of the Tejas is made in India (by Value) Which is about the same % of the thunder which is made in Pakistan (slightly lower actually). It is true that 70% of the parts for it are made in India, but a wheel and a screw is not hard to make.
This is from India’s defense minister as well, from one of the cabinet meetings.
Source:

I’m not here to argue which jet is better or worst or to mock the Tejas. But you have to remember that in a war it won’t matter Wether the jet is Chinese, Pakistani, Indian or from somewhere else, what will matter is if it’s available and it flies. And due to that solely the thunder project is more successful so far. Nobody can deny the Chinese helped the Pakistanis with it obviously, but does that make it a bad jet? Not at all.
Does that mean that India automatically has an inferior Air Force and defense industry? No as well.
So can the Pakistanis for once not just come here to bash the Tejas as well? Or then at least not get offended when the Indians bash the thunder? It’s a defense forum not a defense argument site. It just ruins the entire thread.

Still MOD clearance required:taz:

This is final. Mod clearance is the first step in the long process which was given in 2017. 😂

No Mk1A are on the production floor. All are FOCs. The first one if signed next month will roll out in 2023. That will be a test bed and probably delivered last.

Need to make correction here:

It was said for a that the first LCA Mk1A will be in the air by 2022, with series production starting a year later (Means 2023), a full squadron delivered by 2025 and, with sustained manufacture rate of 16 aircraft or more per year. but now, manufacture rate will be around 20 per year.

It is a light but coming with latest technology for air defence role including ASEA, AA missile- 150 KM range.... It is more then to justify after at looking at south Asia and air force's of our neighbours. it is not going to deal with F 22/F35 etc..

Wrong! HAL Tejas Mk1a is same as JF 17 Block 3.

Again wrong - if you talk this way then even JF 17 is not indigenously developed by chinese because of russian engine, British injection seat and few more other components from another countries. Also i can say the same about SAB Gripen, EF and other fighter aircrafts.

Cabinet approves Procurement of 83 Light Combat Aircrafts (LCA) ‘Tejas’ from HAL for IAF
Posted On: 13 JAN 2021 5:25PM by PIB Delhi

The Cabinet met under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister in New Delhi on 13 January and has approved procurement of 73 LCA Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircrafts and 10 LCA Tejas Mk-1 Trainer aircrafts at the cost of Rs. 45,696 Crore along with Design and Development of Infrastructure sanctions worth Rs.1,202 Crore.

Light Combat Aircraft Mk-1A variant is an indigenously designed, developed and manufactured state-of-the-art modern 4+ generation fighter aircraft. This aircraft is equipped with critical operational capabilities of Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar, Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Missile, Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite and Air to Air Refuelling (AAR) would be a potent platform to meet the operational requirements of Indian Air Force, IAF. It is the first “Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)” category procurement of combat aircrafts with an indigenous content of 50% which will progressively reach 60% by the end of the programme.

The Cabinet has also approved infrastructure development by IAF under the project to enable them handle repairs or servicing at their base depot so that the turnaround time would get reduced for mission critical systems and would lead to increased availability of aircraft for operational exploitation. This would enable IAF to sustain the fleet more efficiently and effectively due to availability of repair infrastructure at respective bases.

Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan, India is continuously growing in its power to indigenously design, develop and manufacture advanced cutting edge technologies and systems in the Defence Sector. The manufacturing of Light Combat Aircraft by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, HAL will give a further push to Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and boost indigenisation of defence production and the defence industry in the country. About 500 Indian companies including MSMEs in the design and manufacturing sectors will be working with HAL in this procurement. The programme would act as a catalyst for transforming the Indian aerospace manufacturing ecosystem into a vibrant Atmanirbhar-self-sustaining ecosystem.

Very few projects in history have been abused and mismanaged as the LCA program has been.

hearing it since i have no pubic hairs and now few are white hairs :enjoy:
Imram bhai I hope you mean the hair on your head are white else its too much info lol
HAL has produced 12 Su-30 MKI and 7 Tejas at peak production in 2018.
As Su-30 orders were ended now entire HAL fighter production will switch to Tejas.

HAL produced 12 Su-30 and 7 Tejas in 2018.
BTW Su-30 is twice the size of JF-17
As size matters to Indians....even our kids are twice the size of you Indians loooool

excellent news

regarding light end of our Air power

we are moving from second generation point defense,mig21 vision with a mechanical 50km radar and old fashioned, flight control to

true 4th generation fighter with aesa radar tracking 64 targets a ranges,of 180km
quadrupled fbw system hms advanced 'ing range bvr the tejas is the easiest plane to fly in sub continent and safeest.

All aircraft with fly by wire system equipped fighter jets are easiest to fly and you're wrong, F-16 has the safest Fly by wire system of in the subcontinent, in fact one of the safest in the world

If you actually bothered to read any of the sources I posted you would realize what you’re saying is false, this is why I posted Indian sources only, but alas the best source is what you say is it not? I can find no press releases, no documents, no statements, nothing to back up what you say except from this photo you posted which further proves my point that making a bolt and a nut doesn’t make an aircraft indigenous. The facts I posted are all correct as of 2019 and they remain as such unless proven otherwise. If not, please give sources.

Also block 3 is the current block of the thunder, it already exists and flies, unlike the Mk1A. and it is still cheaper than the MK1A by a major margin despite similar capabilities and a better payload atm due to a longer service. The thunder has all you mentioned and more plus better BVR tech.
The Mk1A simply cannot Be flying at the time you say it would, even the Indian defense minister admitted it. Nor is the production capability at 16, the last report of HAL wanting to upgrade it to 16 from 8 was in March 2020 (the source I gave) and there’s been nothing to confirm that it’s been done so.
Edit: Also even if the first squadron is delivered by 2025, Thunder Block 3 will have 4 squadrons by then and Block 4 will probably be flying, since the first squadron is to be delivered this year. If they’re the same why is there a 5 year gap? Will they be the same after that 5 year gap?

Lastly, the thunder is as much made in Pakistan as Tejas is in India. Apart from the design phase which China helped with majorly. Though that doesn’t matter at the end of the day when these things fly.
Lastly as the tweet above shows the Mk1A is even less Indian made at 50%.

Please don’t talk about things you know absolutely nothing about and if you’re going to engage in a conversation at least present sources to back up your claims. Otherwise kindly go to a fan page and not a defence Forum.
Regards.
