Journalist Arshad Sharif martyred in Kenya

The Kenyans in the know are blaming a corrupt unit in the police force who kidnap people and then assassinate them. This unit was reported to be gun-for-hire. I don't know if Mr Arshad Sharif's killing was due to a hit job, but the extra-judicial killings of rogue elements within the Kenyan security establishment have been on the rise recently. Luckily, the newly elected President William Ruto has already disbanded such units as soon as he took office. He also promised all cases of disappearances and killings accused of those police units to be fully investigated.

Our heartfelt condolences are with Mr Arshad Sharif and his family. May Allah (swt) takes him to Jannah.

Kenyan authorities said Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif was fatally wounded by police on Sunday night, just months after he fled his home country to avoid arrest over sedition charges.

Arshad Sharif, a prominent Pakistani journalist who fled the country after he was charged with sedition, has died in Kenya after he was shot by police responding to reports of a stolen vehicle, authorities said.
“The officers trailing the motor vehicle … alerted police in Magadi who erected a road barrier,” Bruno Isohi Shioso, a spokesperson for Kenya’s National Police Service, said in a statement.
Sharif’s car allegedly drove through the road barrier and “it is then that they were shot at,” Shioso said. Sharif was “fatally wounded by a police officer,” he said, adding that the incident was being investigated.
According to a police report seen by Kenyan national news outlet The Nation, the roadblock had been set up after reports of a kidnapping that involved a car bearing a similar license plate number to that of Sharif’s.
Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), a civilian watchdog organization, said it has already started investigating the incident.
“I lost friend, husband and my favourite journalist @arsched today, as per police he was shot in Kenya,” Sharif’s wife, Javeria Siddique, tweeted Monday.

‘Anti-state comments’

Sharif fled Pakistan in August due to sedition charges leveled against him for allegedly criticizing state institutions and “abetting mutiny” within the military.
He had interviewed opposition politician Shahbaz Gill, a close ally of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Following the interview, Gill was also charged with sedition by the Pakistani police for making what they claim were “anti-state comments.”
Sharif’s channel ARY initially claimed that it was “being hounded by the present regime,” but then said it had cut ties with Sharif after it was taken off air for about a month on August 8 by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority.
Sharif had to “flee Pakistan in August to save his life,” a close associate of his told CNN. He had initially gone to Dubai but was forced to flee from the UAE due to “harassment by Pakistani officials,” the associate added.
Sharif had “only been in Kenya for a few weeks since that is one of the few places Pakistani passport holders don’t need a visa for entry,” the associate said.
Pakistan’s embassy officials in Nairobi are waiting for a the police report, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Though not technically under military rule today, Pakistan has been ruled by the military for much of its 75-year history.

‘A dedicated and forthright journalist’

The Foreign Press Association, Africa (FPA Africa) said it is “deeply disturbed” by Sharif’s killing, especially the circumstances in which he died.
“Sharif’s death has robbed the media fraternity globally of a dedicated and forthright journalist,” FPA Africa said in a statement.
The association added that it is calling on authorities in Kenya to investigate the incident and thereby assure “foreign journalists based in the country and covering Africa, including those who visit on assignment and other professional undertakings that they’re safe.”
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan tweeted on Monday that “a long, grim record of violent tactics to silence journalists explain why the reported murder of journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya has sent shock waves through the journalist community.”
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted that he was “deeply saddened by the shocking news” of Sharif’s death. Shehbaz also said he had a phone conversation with Kenyan President William Ruto and “I requested him to ensure fair & transparent investigation into shocking incident. He promised all-out help including fast-tracking the process of return of the body” to Pakistan.
CNN’s Bethlehem Feleke reported from Nairobi, Sophia Saifi reported from Islamabad and Irene Nasser reported from Hong Kong.

The 49-year-old journalist fled the country in August to avoid arrest after he was slapped with multiple cases, including sedition charges over an interview with Shahbaz Gill – a close aide of former prime minister Imran Khan – during which Gill made comments deemed offensive to the military.
Alleging harassment by state institutions as well threats to his life he moved to Dubai in August and later relocated to Kenya.
The channel ARY for which Sharif worked for the last eight years was briefly taken off air in August for airing “false, hateful and seditious” content. The channel announced late August it was parting ways with the journalist, who was one of its top prime-time news anchors.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its “sadness” at Arshad Sharif’s death, adding in the statement said that they were in touch with Kenyan officials regarding the matter.
The ministry confirmed that Pakistan’s envoy to Kenya along with embassy officials had identified the body at the Chiromo Funeral House in Nairobi and are now awaiting further procedures and a police report.
“The High Commission will facilitate expeditious repatriation of mortal remains of Mr. Sharif in coordination with the host authorities,” the statement read.
Kenyan media has quoted local police officials who said the shooting was a case of “mistaken identity”.
Confirming the incident, Bruno Shioso, spokesman for Kenya’s National Police Service, told Al Jazeera that local authorities are currently investigating the murder.

“Our competent authorities are currently investigating and can’t comment further than that at present. We shall also issue a preliminary statement in due course,” he said.
Kenyan newspaper The Star reported that the car in which Sharif was travelling was fired upon after it failed to stop at a roadblock on the Nairobi-Magadi highway.
The Islamabad High Court has issued notice to authorities to present them with a report regarding the circumstances of the death at the earliest.
Sharif, who was once considered close to Pakistan’s powerful military establishment, turned into a fierce critic after the removal of former Prime Minister Khan’s government in April.

Demand for inquiry

After the news of Sharif’s death emerged on social media early on Monday, condolences poured in from all quarters.
Pakistan President Arif Alvi, who awarded Sharif with one of Pakistan’s top civilian awards in 2019, tweeted his condolences and said his death was a great loss to journalism and Pakistan.
Shehbaz Sharif, the Pakistani prime minister, also expressed his shock at the death of the journalist.
“I am deeply saddened by the shocking news of journalist Arshad Sharif’s tragic death. May Allah SWT grant him a place in Heaven. My deep condolences and prayers for the bereaved family,” he tweeted on Monday morning.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan demanded an immediate inquiry into Sharif’s death.
“A long, grim record of violent tactics to silence journalists explains why the reported murder of journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya has sent shock waves through the journalist community. The government must pursue an immediate, transparent inquiry into the circumstances of his death,” the organisation said in a statement.
Pakistan has a history of media suppression and violence against journalists.
Last month the United States expressed its concern over press freedoms in Pakistan after Pakistani authorities in August briefly blocked the coverage of ARY, which is seen as sympathetic to former PM Khan.

The fishy thing is, why would they attack the passenger side and let the driver get out alive if it indeed was a stolen vehicle? You surely go for the driver in case of a stolen vehicle.

International media main Pakistan ki tika ke usual izzat afzai horahi hai.

If you were born in Pakistan, it's not your fault, but if you remain there all your life, it's you who should be blamed.

But the documentary about the Nawaz family gains more promotion and many media outlets volunteer to launch it..... This ia another Maqsood Chaprasi , Dr Rizwan, and many more Nawaz crime witnesses killed without clue ......

The timing of Nawaz clan posting that pic of them eating cake while captioning "happy Diwali" is eerie. I believe it was no other than PMLN who ordered the hit on Arshad Sharif. There was hardly any outcry when the people involved in their cases died, so they didn't hesitate to slay a journalist who was uncovering their corruption.
Fukc those swines! and Fukc their handlers who continue to force them onto Pakistan.
