Fact sheet:

Status of the Airforce

China:
-Most of China's air force is not deemed capable (the rest date to refurbished Soviet planes from the 1970s)
-inferior early warning and control. Its new force of Y-8-based KJ-200 and adapted KJ-2000 platforms are untested,
-inferior training of pilots
-only one old aircraft carrier
-J-31 deemed as a cheap rip-off of the F-35 with most of its sub-systems missing

Japan:
-Superior early warning and control, four recently upgraded E-767 AEW&C aircraft
-superior aircraft carrier
-Within couple of years Japan will get stealth jet F-35 (force multiplier)
-Japan is working on their national jet ATD-X Shinshin
-Superior air defense (Missile-3 and Patriot Advanced Capability-3 interceptors)
-Superior air awareness thanks to US/NATO air reconnaissance

Expert's view

-"In short, Japan has a significant edge," says Oriana Mastro, a fellow at the Center for a New American Security think tank. "But the Chinese can create challenges for Japan to maintain aerial superiority."

-"In a conflict Japan would have far better situational awareness," the source says. "Also, Japanese pilots are able to operate autonomously of ground control"

-Wortzel said, “Japan has the strongest navy and air force in Asia except for the United States,”

-"The F-35 is Liaoning's worst nightmare, China's state-owned Global Times reported based on a Kanwa Asian Defense, which found that the F-35 could strike the Liaoning with hard-to-intercept joint strike missiles from a safe distance of 290km. The F-35 should also be able to locate and engage China's main aircraft, the J-15, before the F-35 is even detected."

@atatwolf what's wrong between you and China? Why do you try to bash them in every thread you start?

Japan is a pacifist country for years by it's constitution. Japan's military budget is relatively tiny compared to it's GDP (around 0.7% as far as I remember). Japan did not involve any war after WW2. Only objective of Japanese military is to look intimidating against it's neighbours. However China is aiming to be comparable with US. China also proved itself in the last decade that it can rapidly transform itself to a high tech economy. Adopting new technologies is easy for both it's military and it's private sector.

Japan has the qualitative edge that's for sure being on the top of the value addition chain in the industry. It's industrial know how can be easily transformed into a vast military industrial complex and combined with bushido culture it will be a toxic mixture for it's enemies. But -and that's a big but- Japan has no intention like that.

However there is no point in this discussion. Both countries have different aims. Japan tries to protect it's dignity while negotiating with it's neighbours. But China aims for becoming a global power. Constructive threads that aims Japanese and Chinese friendship would be much suitable IMHO.

I vote Chinese air force because Chinese air force is more technologically advanced. J-10 B has DSI, AESA, IRST and KJ-2000 has AESA.

Don't you know he is angry at China for "oppressing" his Uygher brothers, that's why he supports terrorists attacks on Chinese people in Xinjiang. Now you see his intension of talking rubbish China collapse stories and looking down on China compared to Japan or USA. He really is a sad Turkish guy

Uyghur and Turkish are hardly brothers. They are very different languages. Uyghurs have been Chinese for thousands of years. Uyghur is an official language in Xinjiang. In no way are Uyghurs oppressed in China. On the contrary, Kurdish has no regional official status in Turkey. What do you say about that? @atatwolf

Japan won't be getting F-35 till after 2020. Even the US air force won't be getting F-35 will 2017 at the earliest. J-20 last prototype 2016 flies this year and serial production starts next year.

The fact is, both could exterminate the Turkish state in weeks. China invests very little money into the military for a reason.

No need to bash Turkey just because with some particular members.

BTW, Japan nowadays is weak, they don't have any power to exterminate any country in the world.

What is the point of 'voting' here ?

How many Chinese Fighters are with operational AESA

Why would we want to 'exterminate' any country ?

Very well said @Lure ! While I can understand our brother @atatwolf 's passion and drive, right now, its best to understand the geopolicy of the region. Both Japan and China do not aim for conflict, but rather, are participating in international processes to secure trade and resources, but to help in minimizing instability by contributing humanitarian aid, sharing the burden in fleet convoy support et al.

Japan has no plans in becoming a 'super power' , but merely maintaining stability in our effective region and also contributing military aid to our allies -- if it needs to -- and when our national strategic interests are threatened. Right now, as it stands, China and Japan's interests overlap -- be it in economics (greatly so, as our combined bilateral trade is now close to $400 Billion per annum), politics, to energy and environmental security.

In respect of Chinese-Japanese friendship, I must abstain from voting.
