Iran’s Freefall Into Poverty

That's the natural outcome of trying to afford a proxy empire.

Corruption in Iran is no more or no less than in rest of the region. Corruption was also rampant during Shah's time. However what some very immature posters here are overlooking is Iran had/has one of the largest oil/gas reserves in the world. This country should have been Germany of the east by now. It should have had one of the highest per capitas in the world. As comparison look at GCC.

Even more alarmingly Turkey a country that Iran was slightly ahead in 1979 has overtaken it and is today miles ahead of Iran. considering Turkey has no oil/gas this comes as most surprising. And Turkey has fully bitten the US carrot and is fully paid member of the NATO and other western alliances. Considering the oil/gas and the potential of the Iranian people they have been shafted by America.

Not exactly...and about Turkey not even remotely true I must say...

Oil does not mean a country would become wealthy automatically for example Nigeria and even in GCC, UAE is has much better GDP per capita than KSA despite KSA's has much more oil and also income from Hajj.

And about Turkey, it couldn't be farther from the truth since Turkish economy took off under Tayyip Erdogan with whom west and especially USA do not have best of the relations but he has bridled and corruption and reformed the government and purged the system of traitors and agents of external agencies. That is why CIA orchestrated the coup but it backfired. So even in Turkey's case, the reduction of corruption made the whole difference.

It does. Only question is how much oil you have. How many people you have. If you have lots of oil and few people = filthy rich. Nigeria has oil but has far too many people. Approaching 200 million. Most of GCC have smaller populations then a typical town in Pakistan. Iran had I believe second or third largest oil resources in the world and population was not very high in 1980s - mid 30s million I think.

And Turkey's rise has been thanks to it's close association with Europe/America. The take off under erdogan came about after decades of layed down the foundation. Ask the many Turkish members here. They will tell you how much they depend on the West for investment/markets/technology. That is why Turkey that faces Europe is booming.

I would like to see their opinions as well as @HAKIKAT can throw some light on the subject.

Iran is doing better than most. No need to listen to CIA run sites like Radio Farda. If the Americans cared about the poor... well, they should start by doing something about their homeless problems.

I also find it funny when people from crap-hole countries try to put Iran down..... look at the modern and developed infrastructure in Iran and compare it to your own backwards turd-holes..... and then just STFU.

Radio Farda, huh.

The Farsi language branch of the US Government funded propaganda service Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

I don't deny that there is poverty in Iran, but I will call bullshit on this exaggerated propaganda piece.

CIA, with 50 million people on food stamps, and a Saudi boy whose regime is desperately trying to auction off its oil company to foreigners to pay a dozen dictatorships they hired to invade Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, and Iraq say Iran is poor !

Iran Mall, a 1,200,000 m2 poverty center in Tehran under construction.... :coffee:

Iran is 100% Developed Nation , if it was not for the illegal sanctions , Iran like Turkey would be Top democratic representative of Muslim World , Pakistan is in Emerging category as we have not attain that level of Independence from US dollar influence

Turkey / Iran / Pakistan are the Top 3 representative of Democractic institutes in Muslim world and we have same focus on education, engineering and awareness of our presence in world

Without the west we would never have gotten so far and as for the foundation of the economic ''rise'',it was layed down in 1980.
It took twenty years(2000) to come this far, with investments and loans from the EU(Germany,Holland),for the Erdogan fanboys it was he who did it and as you can see from the heading of the country(economic situation),inflation at 12%,unemployment at 13%,its looking good huh?
Without the West, our economy is fvcked, bigtime.

Half of Turkish exports go to Eurozone and by far largest chunk of FDI in Turkey comes from EU.
I think those two are reason enough not to write a wall of text why Turkey cant afford to abandon west since there is no country in close proximity to replace Europe in this size.

I know. The other day I was following a huge articulated truck and I noticed the Euro plates with TR. It was a Turkish truck and i thought to see a Turkish truck in my inconsequential town so far up north was indicative of Turkish economy doing well and being connected to Europe. This was not the first time I have seen Turkish trucks.

The strange thing is if Shah had remained in power Turkey would have been far more 'connected' to the east. Iran would have been a giant economy by now and Turkey being neighbour would have benefited enormously as well as Pakistan. 1979 was a tragic event.

It's okay for the 'stand against West' brigade' most of whom ironically are sat in the West while asking for their brothers back home to stand against the West. They don't have to face the economic consequences.

@xenon54 @T-123456

How poor we are!!!
Your not poor. It would be silly to assume that. Your average citizens is fairly secure and your education system is exceptional. I real living standards your not that far behind Turkey.

But that is mediocre. We can't compare you to Bangladesh can we? You should have been in the same league as South Korea or even Germany by now with the potential you had - all of which has been blunted by 1979. That is a tragedy for Iran and the region.

just another venezuela. all that oil gone to waste.
I don't think the situation as as bad as that. Iranians are a smart, sophisticated people and the country has built up human capital which has reached critical mass. This country resembles poor Eastern European country when it should and could have been a powerhouse of the east.

Even now if mullahs let go and this country accomodated USA/Israel within a decade it would overtake the region and be on the way to becoming another Germany.
