Iran has often and clearly warned that if Israel or the US strike its nuclear facilities, it will retaliate forcefully. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other Iranian officials have stressed that any such attack would result in a prompt and severe military response, which might lead to a larger regional confrontation, Araghchi emphasized Tehran's will to protect its nuclear facilities at all costs by calling any attempt to hurt Iran "crazy" and describing an attack on Iran's nuclear sites as a "very bad disaster" for the region.

Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles against Israeli military bases in October 2024 in retaliation for Israeli strikes against Hezbollah and Iranian interests in Lebanon and Syria. Israel responded with airstrikes in Iran, targeting military sites but reportedly avoiding direct attacks on nuclear facilities, partly due to pressure from the United States and the difficulty of destroying deeply buried sites like the Fordow enrichment plant, Israeli officials have made it clear that any future attacks on nuclear or oil infrastructure will be met with "a more powerful response." These warnings come amid heightened tensions following a series of missile and drone attacks between Iran and Israel.

Regarding Israeli threats against its nuclear plants, Iran has also publicly protested to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), denouncing any action as a breach of international law, Tehran disputes Western claims that it wants to develop nuclear weapons and maintains that its nuclear program is benign, but tensions have increased as Iran has resumed uranium enrichment to levels that Western nations claim might be used for weapons after the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) under President Trump.

Iran rhetoric, which warns that strikes on its nuclear facilities could spark a regional conflict that no superpower wants to start, is indicative of a larger strategic stance of deterrence, while Tehran indicates that it would want to avoid direct combat but will not hesitate to defend its sovereignty and nuclear program, Iranian authorities emphasize that their response will be prompt and decisive in order to discourage Israel and the US from adopting military alternatives.
