chine is investing in its jet engine why we take part in it why we do not take part in helicopter engine and tanks etc . We must invest in china in these projects if succeeded bring it at home after building infrastructure at home. I think we have infrastructure at home but we dont have any will power .

There is no reason why Pakistan should not build an indigenous Jet engine. You have to make a start somewhere and that is not to say that it will be ready next year. Whenever we start it will take sometime so why not start now. We should also build turbines for Electrical plants and other types of engines. Develop something on a small scale and then keep improving and enhancing the project.

I say go for it.

This is called misplaced priorities. Pakistan imported worth of billions dollar of engine & transmission of moped, bike, car, truck , earth moving vehicles etc. every year which is many time more than a jet engine. Nobody give soft loan for your own project.

The engine not using now in LCA not means that is a debacle because the project was officially delinked from the Tejas programme in September 2008. [because the Kaveri failed to satisfy the necessary technical requirements within its timelines Tejas]..

On 5 February 2007, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister M Natarajan said nearly 90 to 93 per cent of the expected performance had been realised and the government had recently floated an expression of interest to seek partners to move the programme further.

On 3 May 2010, about 1880 hrs of engine test had been completed on various prototypes of Kaveri Engine. A total of eight Kaveri Engines and four core engines have been manufactured, assembled and tested. High Altitude testing on core engine has been completed successfully ...

The engine has been able to produce thrust of 70-75 Kilo Newton but what the IAF and other stake-holders desire is power between 90—95 KN.( 2011 Jan report)

In Lok Sabha on 10 December. 2012 Defence Minister A K Antony gave an update on the progress made by the Kaveri Engine Development Project as follows:

So far, 9 prototypes of Kaveri Engine and 4 prototypes of Kabani (Core) Engine have been developed.2200 hours of test (ground and altitude conditions) has been conducted.
The following two major milestones have been achieved:
Successful completion of Official Altitude Testing (OAT) ; and
Demonstration of First Block of flight of Kaveri Engine in Flying Test Bed (FTB).


Kaveri Engine was integrated with IL-76 Aircraft at Gromov Flight Research Institute (GFRI), Russia and flight test was successfully carried out up to 12 km maximum altitude and maximum forward speed of 0.7 Mach No. Twenty Seven flights for 57 hours duration have been completed.

“We are abandoning the plan for co-development with Snecma. We still need an overseas partner. But it will not be Snecma on a single-vendor basis. We will select our partner through competitive bidding,” says Dr CP Ramnarayanan, director, GTRE told the Business Standard. “To develop a more powerful Kaveri engine quickly and to become self-reliant in engine design, we need a foreign partner which can bring in core technologies. After years of development, the Kaveri jet engine still delivers significantly less power than what a modern fighter requires. In 27 flight-test performed last year at the Gromov Flight Research Institute (GFRI) in Russia, the Kaveri’s maximum thrust (termed “wet thrust”) was measured at 70.4 KiloNewtons (KN). High-performance fighters like theTejasor the AMCA need engines that generate at least 90 KN of thrust.

Since its first run in 1996 nine Kaveri engines built. Although, due to the delays in development and insufficient thrust, Kaveri is not destined for theTejas Indigenous Fighter Aircraft, it is being considered as the powerplant forIndia’s first Unmanned Strike Air Vehicle (USAV) also under development at the DRDO.

Among the challenges faced by the developers are the manufacturing of super-alloys and fabrication of parts for the engine’s hot section core, at temperatures of 1600 degrees.

Secondly, Tejas was DESIGNED entirely by India, though some systems are subcontracted to international firms who are experts in their own fields. Like as I said even the F-22 is not indigenous with seven international companies participating including 1150 American firms, due to their expertise in various components and sub systems.

Exactly. We developed its several critical systems including FBW.

Plus 60% systems in Tejas is indigenous.

When Brahmos was first inducted in IA it's all sub systems were developed by Russia.

Now the Russian share has dropped to 80% and this trend will continue.



India Test-Fires Brahmos Missile with Indigenous Systems

Strengthening indigenous missile development capabilities, India today successfully test-fired the 290-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the integrated test range at Chandipur off the coast of Orissa.


The 32nd test-firing was part of the development trials of the missile which has already been inducted into the Army and the Navy.

The objective of the mission was to evaluate some of the newer subsystems which are produced from the Indian industry as part of production stabilisation, BrahMos officials said, adding more than 25 such systems were incorporated in the development missile.

The launch was primarily aimed at testing the new power systems, materials for airframe components, guidance scheme and various electric systems, they said.

The data obtained from the test-firing is being analysed for large-scale production by Indian industries, they said.

The two-stage missile, the first one being solid and the second one ramjet liquid propellant, has already been inducted into the Army and Navy and the Air-Force version is in final stage of trial, officials said.

While induction of the first version of sophisticated BrahMos missile system in the Indian Navy commenced from 2005 with INS Rajput, it is now fully operational with two regiments of the Army.

The air launch version and the submarine launch version of the missile system are in progress, Prasad said.

The Army has so far placed orders for the BrahMos missile to be deployed by three regiments of the Army and two of them have already been inducted operationally.

The Defence Ministry has also given a go-ahead to Army to induct a third regiment equipped with the missile system to be deployed in Arunachal Pradesh along the China border.

Brahmos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian joint venture company headed by a distinguished Indian Defence scientist, is also working to develop the air as well as the submarine launch version of the missile system and work on the project is in progress.

The last trial of Brahmos was conducted successfully on March 28, 2012 from the same base.

Be Realistic
LCA Tejas lacs ingenious content - Designed with the help of Dassault , American engine, Israeli avionics and other smaller components such as Martin baker ejection seats foreign. The most Indian thing in it is the funding that went into it.

Pakistan will and cannot build an aircraft engine in next 25 years. I bet your government won't even initiate a project with the funding. Mark this post and read it after 25 years, Pakistan will be exactly where it is today.
