What's new

India's First indigenous aircraft carrier to be launched this December.

Adding to that the Navy really did not have to worry about the delays that come from indigenous projects because they really had no competition whatsoever in the last 2 or 3 decades from any one in this region except the USN.

This was a luxury the Army and AF could not afford since they were always concerned with the Chinese and the Pakistanis in North-East and West respectively.
Can't agree with that. China's naval buildup has always been a cause of worry, especially their strength in the submarine arm. By the time our FIRST nuke sub was built, they had nine. And it doesn't help that our diesel electrics parallelly became outdated. It was very painful but they decided to bite it.

LM2500 Marine Gas Turbine

LM2500 marine gas turbine is a simple-cycle, two-shaft, high-performance engine. Derived from GE’s TF39 and CF6-6 aircraft engines, the LM2500 consists of a gas generator, a power turbine, attached fuel and lube oil pumps, a fuel control and speed governing system, associated inlet and exhaust sections, lube and scavenge systems as well as controls and devices for starting and monitoring engine operation. The LM2500 has four major components a16stage, 18:1 pressure ratio-compressor with seven stages of variable stators and inlet guide vanes;a fully annular combustor with externally mounted fuel nozzles; a two stage, air-cooled high-pressure turbine which drives the compressor and the accessory-drive gearbox; and a six-stage, aerodynamically coupled, low-pressure power turbine which is driven by the gas generator’s high-energy exhaust gas flow.
Easy to install and maintain, the LM2500 features the following: a simple modular design, marine corrosion-resistant materials and minimum size, weight and space requirements per horsepower. The LM2500 delivers high thermal efficiency and low fuel and airflow per horsepower. The LM2500 marine gas turbine is frequently housed in a high-shockresistant, thermal, acoustic enclosure and mounting base. The enclosure attenuates noise in the engine room and provides sensors for inlet icing and fire detection. It also houses fire extinguishing equipment. GE furnishes these modules for the United States Navy and other navies. The modules can be equipped with either resilient shock mounts or hard mounts. Resilient shock mounts not only provide mechanical safeguards, they also are important for absorbing structure-borne noises and reducing the ship’s noise signature.
Pre-wired, pre-piped and factory tested for easy installation, the LM2500 module weighs just 48,000 pounds (22,000 kg) with shock mounts and45,500 pounds (20,639 kg) without. It requires only 324 x 108 x 120 cubicinches of ship space (27 x 9 x 10 feet) (8.23 x 2.74 x 3.05 m). The inletduct flow area is 48 square feet and the exhaust duct flow area is36 square feet (3.34 sq m).

The simple modular design of the LM2500 incorporates many features which maximize shipboard maintainability and minimize parts replacement downtime, such as a split compressor casing, in-place blade and vane replacement, in-place hot section maintenance and accessible external fuel nozzles.

Performance-output 33,600 shp (25,060 kW)

SFC .373 lb/shp-hr

Heat rate 6,860 Btu/shp-hr
9,200 Btu/kWs-hr
9,705 kJ/kWs-hr
Exhaust gas flow 155 lb/sec (70.5 kg/sec)
Exhaust gas temperature 1,051°F (566°C)
Power turbine speed 3600 rpm

Major Saab on fire..Good info..

BTW EMAL seems to be in the wishlist of Navy..The only question is , will US let us have it..?

.
@ Exactly MSS- Feb 2011 was supposed to be floatout of the ship. Then take it to sea and spend a few years integrating the system, catapult, air defence etc. and test.

The body structure of IAC has been build and 1st level of wiring is going on... we can see around 200 electrician are working on it daily, however we cannot go inside the area and its properly camouflaged now.

Still lots of work is left... we can see massive holes in ship, I think lots things still need to integrated in it.

Will post pics later.

Thanks for the information, When they will put this IAC 1 to sea?? I heard that After structure is ready it will be shifted to some other place, then other fitting will be done...

Fair enough. I have reconsidered my position on the Indian Navy.

.

After seeing some of your post, i thought you have some Anti-India stuff going on inside you. But i am impressed with your mindset change. See China has lesser problems than India and so of course they will developing faster at the moment (If AlQaida, Taliban, LeT etc start attacking China, will China be able to continue this growth rate???) . We don't quick fix solutions to control people with different methodologies( like Tiananmen Square). But once India continues in this path for the next few decades, you will start to see the difference. Definitely Democracy with educated folks is the powerful system.

Latest Defence news: Second Indian Aircraft Carrier will be larger, says Indian Naval Chief

indigenously built aircraft carrier, IAC-2, will be larger and feature heavier fighter aircraft.

The IAC-2 could undergo some design changes, Naval Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma indicated while speaking to the press on Wednesday, December 2, ahead of Navy Day on December 4, 2009.

"We are re-looking at the design. It won't be a copy of what we have today," he said

He said a concept study by the Directorate of Naval Design is currently underway 'for more capable carrier-borne aircraft' for the IAC-2.

The Navy is leaning towards a 50,000 tons carrier capable of launching heavier aircraft using a steam catapult, rather than the ski-jump on the Gorshkov / Vikramaditya.

The Navy has earlier indicated it prefers the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (Emals) on its new aircraft carriers.

The Navy issued an RFI (request for information) to several global aviation majors, including American Boeing, French Dassault and Russian MiG companies, for 'an alternate deck-based aircraft' in November.

"Information is being sought to acquire over 40 fighters for the 40,000-tonne IAC-1 (indigenous aircraft carrier), being built at the Cochin shipyard and expected to roll out by 2014-2015 now, and IAC-2, which will follow later," a source told TOI.
