NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old Indian woman, who was allegedly sold and tortured in Saudi Arabia, will return to India on Wednesday, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said. "Thanks for bringing this to my notice. Sukhwant Kaur is returning home on 31 May 2017 at 0415 hrs by Flt G9406," Ms Swaraj tweeted.

The minister's response came after her attention was drawn to a news report in which Ms Kaur's husband Kulwant Singh alleged that she had gone to Saudi Arabia on a three-month tourist visa in January, but was sold and tortured there. According to the report, Ms Kaur, hailing from Jalandhar, was taken to Saudi Arabia by a Delhi-based agent. Mr Singh said his wife was in contact with him over phone for a week after she landed in Dubai. But a few days later, her phone got switched off and the agent also did not attend his calls.

"On May 7, my wife called me up from a hospital in Hail City of Saudi Arabia. She said the travel agent had sold her to a local resident and she was forced to work as a slave in his house and was being badly treated and even tortured," he was quoted as saying in the report.

I am sure your foreign minister will likely to differ your opinion :p

However, I agree that method of Saudis are non-human friendly but again if you don't like then you should not go to KSA ...

Even Sri Lanka sends people there but it has a GDP per capita close to 4000 USD and plenty of job vacancies for anyone ready to get a bit of training and people go there to get treated like shit.

4000 USD per month or year? Per month is not too bad. I can see why lots of people from Indian subcontinent go there. But if it's per year, why go there?

It's GDP per capita of Sri Lanka, not the salary.

The salary they get in the Middle East on the other hand is quite high and nothing in Sri Lanka can beat it to be honest. Lots of people go there either because of easy money or exploitation. One underage girl was sent there and her head was cut off after she mistakenly killed the baby that she was babysitting. They receive no training whatsoever. Vast majority of them come back just fine but the risk is not worth it IMO. Besides, what qualification do you get by working as a housemaid? It's better to take the hard way and engage in something more professional and more rewarding in the long term.
