A former interlocutor on Jammu and Kashmir Prof Radha Kumar Monday warned that India could lose Kashmir in the next decade if serious efforts were not made to resolve the lingering dispute.

Radha Kumar said that the situation in Kashmir progressively deteriorated.

“It hasn’t been as bad as this in a long time,” she said at the opening session – ‘Kashmir Today: Towards an Indian Future?’ during the second day of Times LitFest on Sunday. “The government doesn’t seem to be working and little of the Common Minimum Programme has been implemented,” she said.

“The only time there has been any forward movement in Kashmir,” she said, “is when both Pakistan and the Kashmiris have been involved in negotiations.”

“This was the case when General Musharraf was in office in Pakistan. There were civil society discussions between Indian and Kashmiris, through the back channel, and this put pressure on Gen Musharraf,” said Prof Kumar.

India spends 100's of crores and also working hard to hold on to its territory.

Efforts are on all fronts to make that region prosperous and peaceful.

I don't think Kashmir will slip away.

How ? The situation in Kashmir is not new. I think Kashmir is more peaceful now than 90ss. There was much bad situation in 90s but still Kashmir is interngal part of India.

India needs to just sit over this issue for 5 years-

If we didn't loose Kashmir in 89- we'll probably never loose it again in next 5 years- A mistake was made in 89 when It was not handed over to Army- Talking to Pakistan now would be another mistake-

Built the infrastructure- promote tourism- I liked the idea of hosting cricket match in Srinagar- Do it- host cricket matches, football and hockey matches there-

Strengthen the local police- develop a J&K SWAT force for operation in Urban areas- Improve the technical capabilities of Army- get them drones and better border fences and intel- gathering gadget-

Let the economic activity flourish- And get the pundits to the valley in fortified settlements-

Horse$hit, the security situation in Kashmir is better than it has ever been- the GoI has spent billions on the LoC fence cutting down the supply of scumbags to a trickle and is also investing many times more on infrastructure projects in the state.

I wonder what agenda this loser has.

Exactly, also we should find put what she is smoking

This comment, and comments of this nature are generally intended to be presented in exaggerated light, to be used as a prodding tool to coerce the government towards a certain action. Arundhati Roy's vitriolic comments are a prime example of this, intended to stoke public reaction. It would appear this particular lady is not exactly thrilled with the lack of dialogue/progress on Kashmir issue and this is her attempt to poke the government forward. As such it needs to be treated with circumspect caution.

But anyways, such apocalyptic predictions for certain reasons skip the enormous ability of the Indian government machinery to withstand savage, unrelenting punishment over vast stretches of time. The GOI is a veteran of over 50 years of insurgencies; that's plenty of time to perfect the protocols for dealing with an emerging insurgency. And unlike in the past, there are plenty of available forces that can be rapidly re-inducted into Kashmir theater to impose a clampdown.

Too bad for the separatists:
Protest with ISIS flags, nobody gives a damn;
Protest with stones, police breaks your face, and still nobody gives a damn;
Protest with guns, now everybody gives a damn,
Then you get killed, And everybody returns to nobody gives a damn.
The Indian Army: Giving the damn to every damned militant till nobody gives them a damn.

Indians wont lost Kashmir to Pakistanis, they will lose Kashmir to the Kashmiris.

Had that been even a remote possibility, the issue would have been resolved a while back. Kashmir cannot exist as an independent entity. If Pakistan had believed so then they would have let "Azad" Kashmir actually be azad. If India were to ever withdraw forces from Kashmir, Pakistan will move in the next day.

Radha Kumar can lose her head before that! All this is happening in Lit-fest!!

Its all because of such morons that people have coined the term pseudo seculars. They are traitors in my eyes.

There is no great mystery. She is perfectly in her senses. When popular consensus and conventional wisdom dictates one way, there is no premium in supporting that narrative. There is a far greater recognition for taking a contrarian position which is not supported by reason or facts, yet will find a popular constituency.

I will give you a simple example. Hundreds of books have been written about the death and destruction heaped on Bangladesh by the Pakistani Army in '71. Do you know any one of those authors or their books? On the other hand, everyone knows Sarmila Bose, because she is the only person who wrote a book contrary to what is common knowledge. If anything, at least Pakistanis consider her to be a "great author". Now wouldn't you play such tricks to be successful?
