Senior BJP leader L K Advani on Tuesday faced hostile crowds at Amritsar’s Golden Temple as Akali Dal (A) workers, along with president Simranjit Singh Mann, greeted him by raising slogans like “Khalistan Zindabad” and “Advani Katilan da sathi (Advani, the supporter of killers)”.

Besides the district police, SGPC task force personnel were deployed to escort Advani into the sanctum sanctorum while Police Commissioner R P Mittal was present to oversee security arrangements.

With Akali Dal (A) workers raising slogans for about an hour — till the time Advani left the premises — and also flaying the SGPC for presenting him Siropa, the policemen, who were in plain clothes, faced a tough time controlling the crowd near Darshani Deodi.

The moment Advani entered the temple, around 70 to 80 supporters of Akali Dal (A) started raising slogans claiming that Advani had no right to visit the Golden Temple where several innocent Sikhs were killed during Operation Blue Star in 1984. When asked about his views on Operation Blue Star, Advani walked away with folded hands.

The BJP leader also faced angry protests from Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) president Jaswinder Singh, who was present at the temple with dozens of his supporters.

On Monday evening, during his arrival at the rally venue in Amritsar, Advani was greeted with slogans like “Khalistan Zindabad” by Sikh youth. Six of them were later rounded up by the police.
