Delhi: Minor girl critical after being raped brutally
A nine-year-old girl is battling for her life at a hospital in the Capital after being sexually assaulted brutally by a 25-year-old man two days ago in north Delhi.
The victim, a class three student at the local government school in Bara Hindu Rao, was playing with two of her friends in the ridge area when the accused — identified as Gopi Nisha Malha — approached her. “According to the girl’s father, she and her friends were playing when Malha called out to them and offered to show them ‘something unique’ around 6:30 pm on Sunday,” said a senior police officer.
While her friends refused, the victim followed him, only to be gagged, bound and subjected to rape and sodomy at a secluded spot in the neighbourhood. The victim’s friends, after hearing her cries for help, informed her mother who, in turn, rushed to the local police station to provide a description of Malha.
“Two hours later, the victim’s mother spotted Malha in the Nawabganj area who fled, leaving the victim crying at the spot,” the officer said.
The girl was rushed to the Bara Hindu Rao hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit given the nature of her injuries and underwent a surgery on Monday. “Her condition, however, is still critical with doctors saying that she needs another surgery. Malha was arrested by a police team based on his description as per the girls and the victim’s mother,” said the officer.
The police said they have registered a case under sections 363 (Punishment for kidnapping), 376 (Punishment for rape), 377 (Unnatural offences) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 3/4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO) at the Bara Hindu Rao police station against Malha who was sent to judicial custody on Monday.

Scrutiny of sexual violence in India has grown since the 2012 gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus
Police in India have arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl in Delhi.
The girl was playing in the park when the accused offered her some sweets and took her away to a secluded area where he raped her, police said.
A neighbour found her in the park and informed her parents. She was taken to hospital and her condition is stable.
Scrutiny of sexual violence in India has grown since the 2012 gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus.
The government tightened laws on sexual violence last year after widespread protests following the attack.
But violence and discrimination against women remain deeply entrenched in India's staunchly patriarchal society.
The latest incident took place on Sunday evening in Delhi's Bara Hindu Rao area.
Police say the accused is a relative of the landlord in whose house the girl's family lives.
Last month, a 51-year-old Danish tourist was gang-raped at knife-point close to her Delhi hotel. A group of men assaulted her in the Paharganj area in the early evening after she lost her way and asked for help.
Also last month, an 18-year-old German was raped in Tamil Nadu on a train.
