Combat Drones: How US-Israeli Tango is risking India’s Security Scenario
Published October 13, 2017 SOURCE: THOMAS D’SOUZA / FOR MY TAKE / IDRW.ORG
India’s quest to buy Combat drones from Israel and United States seems to be heading to nowhere after reports emerged that both Israel and the United States have suddenly developed cold feet on supply and transfer of Combat Drone technology to India. India’s request for 100 Stealth Combat Avenger Drones are still pending with Trump administration and India’s closest exporter of defense equipment over the years, Israel too wants to restrict the sale of combat drones to India in lieu of new export restriction imposed by Israeli government reportedly under American pressure. India’s Plans to purchase 10 Israeli Heron-TP is yet to be materialized even after 3 years of negotiation. Reportedly Israel has offered India Range restricted export variant of Heron-TP which was developed and offered to Non-MTCR Countries even though India already has entered MTCR Group. Israeli companies due to new government export restrictions on drones are not willing to Transfer Technology of its Heron-TP for ” Make in India ” to fulfill an expanded order with a local Indian partner. India’s good old friend, Russia is yet to develop combat drones on its own which it can offer to India, while India’s own efforts to develop armed drones based on local Rustam-1 and Rustom-II drone platforms are running behind schedules and are yet to enter production or achieve any key milestones which have only prolonged India’s urgent need for armed drones for its forces . Pakistan on another hand already has developed Burraq armed UAV based on Chinese Transfer of Technology and is also keen on acquiring China’s ‘Wing Loong II’ Armed (Predator-class) medium-altitude, long-endurance drones to further enhance its strike capabilities. Pakistan also has been offered an armed version of Turkey’s Anka-S Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Class UAV which could further enhance its armed drone fleet. US-Israeli undesired tango on sale of armed drones to India, which both countries admit is their closest strategic partner in Asia will only create security complications for Indian Defence forces ,which will only help Pakistan which has been opposing sale of armed drones to India out of fear that it could be used to target terrorist camps and facilities in Pakistan occupied Kashmir .
