China, US need 'Cold War rulebook'

A lack of detailed operational guidelines between the Chinese military and the United States and its allies is heightening fears that a miscalculation or mishap across Asia's crowded seas and skies could get out of control.

Airborne surveillance and fighter patrols from the United States and its Japanese and South Korean allies are expected to increase to counter any Chinese measures to police the zone, experts said.

"The chance of error is high," said Bonnie Glaser, an expert on Chinese security at the independent Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. "If things continue along their present path, you do have to wonder what the consequences will be. There should be an understanding on what constitutes a safe intercept, and there should be reliable communication channels between air forces."

The Soviet Union spent almost 30% of their GDP on their military, and created arguably the most powerful land army in history.

China in comparison spends only about 1-2% of GDP on our military budget. And our current GDP is almost double that of the Soviet Union at its peak.

The real war is the economic one. Of course, America will also be very happy to incite other countries into going to war with China, like they supported Georgia against Russia, or South Korea against North Korea.

Of course, when Russia occupied Georgia, or North Korea bombed South Korea repeatedly, America sat back and laughed at how easily they were able to force a proxy war without getting touched themselves.

They are clever, as one would expect the sole superpower to be.

Accept it or not, but sooner or later China will definitely participate in arms race with US ... and with economic growth, China's military power is also bound to grow up .. US is clever, but I hope China is also clever enough to learn from Soviet mistakes and won't give US a chance to stand when the times comes....

After the Korean War (the longest retreat of US forces in all of history), the USA was no longer interested in a "direct" fight with China. They simply were not willing to swap casualties with such a large force, and ended up retreating.

Instead, they concentrated on putting up proxies against us. They will want to force those proxies into a war with us, but the proxies themselves have too much to lose, and they aren't interested in fighting China as America's cannon fodder.

This bought us enough time to go through with our economic development. And that is where the real battle will be fought, in terms of the economy.
