US set to adopt new Cold War strategy on Russia: Report

Russia will always have a safety net in the Chinese market. But I doubt it will even need to be invoked. How will US convince the EU to stop buying Russian gas? What a Hollywood pipe dream!

Let me tell you what happened to wholesale propane prices just a few months ago. The cold wave in January sent mid-atlantic wholesale propane prices from $1.67/gallon to $2.73/gallon. A disruption in Russian gas supply will drive Natural and propane prices through the roof not only for Europe, but also here in U.S.

There is no alternative to Russian gas in the foreseeable future.

The Americans are planning to open their own oil and gas coffers for the Europeans. Add gas rich regions of Europe like Scotland to it and they are basically planning to attack Russia's energy market.

There are two possibilities:

1- If the suicidal EU decides to boycott Russian gas immediately, then their countries will be crippled for the short term till they build pipelines from Qatar (therefore furhter encourage radicalism in their own countries).

2- The European nations stand up and says no to Obama at the risk of being kicked out of NATO and even other agreements.

Russia is gonna divert gas to china for sure, thats a done deal

Point is can the pipelines come to india too?

If that happens then russia has no use of europe at all

It can. But we will have to really use our brains and make an arrangement which solves two problems:

1- Chinese should not be able to control the gas flow into India.

2- We must devise a trust mechanism so that we can establish an agreement where both us and the Chinese don't have to worry about each other.

BRICS (incluing RIC) may have some teething problems but 10 years down the lane, BRICS will be the reality.

I agree, chinese must have 0 control on gas flow.

And u are right on brics, its gonna be a reality within a decade, now that russia is more desperate than ever

If the next cold war is around the corner, I hope we bet on Russia this time, we have been screwed over by the yanks enough times....

China will not touch Russia-India pipeline, especially since the route doesn't go through China. So no worry. The big problem will be Taliban happy trigger finger that may disrupt flow.

It is not just Russia; we all need to take a strong standing. And why I said 10 years later is because we Indians will need this time to treble our self-sufficiency in military industrial capabilities so that we have maximum hardware either from our own industries or from Russia or JVed.

Remember that all of the BRICS countries are not hostile to the west including us. We want good relations with all but cannot trust everyone blindly. Brazil and South Africa though will need to be convinced before we can take any major step into converting BRICS into a military alliance. Of the BRICS (RIC) 3 nations border each other and are on the same continent.

This means South Africa and Brazil are isolated on each of their continents. This will also mean that in the event of a worst circumstance that we can imagine, we along with the Chinese and Russians should be able to send troops to support them if someone invades them either on their own continent or from outside.

It is a long way but it is a good opportunity in the near future. The only bone of contention is between us and the Chinese and if this gets resolved, then we can look into a strong future together.

Out of these 5 in the brics, cooperation in military sphere and economy is possible onlx between china, india and russia only.

Brazil and south africa have diff threat perceptions and will most likely not join

Exactly.

See, a time will come when both you and us will have to join forces to fight this menace. If we are looking at long term gas and oil pipelines from Russia, till there is Azad Kashmir we cannot have pipelines directly into our country. It will pass through you or it will pass through Pakistan.

If we can solve our differences out in a conclusive and mutually beneficial manner, we honestly won't mind a pipeline through China, considering the friendly history we have had for centuries.
