China rolls out AWACS aircrafts for Pakistan Air Force

I'm translating some info from a series of forum posts by a well-respected poster (fr6, who works in the airborne electronics industry) on the most reliable of Chinese aerospace forums (9ifly). He posted these bits and pieces of information early this year. All of them were supposed to be unclassified materials available in publicly circulated academic journals.

1) ZDK-03 began its life in early 2000s as Project 021. It's one of many AWACS development programs China undertook after the failed PHACLON deal with Israel. Unlike the KJ-2000 project which depends on the development of a new Chinese AESA radar, Project 021 took the safer route, aimed at perfecting mature technology existing in China. It was designed to satisfy PLA's combat needs in any contingency over Taiwan. A prototype was produced, which was the white plane whose photos we saw on the internet.

2) After the success of KJ-2000, Project 021 saw continued development as an potential export model. Although employing older technologies It's a full-fledged AWACS rather than AEWs Western countries are exporting.

For a period of time, Project 021 was nicknamed 'Persian Eye' by engineers working on it, which is of course quite telling.

The 021 prototype was flied to Pakistan almost ten times during 2006. ZDK-03, the version sold to Pakistan, is an extensive redevelopment of the original Project 021 with newer designs and technologies.

3) Radar hasn't seen much change from the original one on Project 021 as developing a brand new radar takes a long time. The radar design in question is referred to as a 'Chinese version' of a well-known American radar. It uses both mechanical scanning (for horizontal) and electronic scanning (for vertical). The poster claimed it has both pros and cons comparing to the radar onboard of 'one certain Nordic AEW', and may in fact be preferable for AWACS use.

4) Communication system. In order to make sure ZDK-03 can talk to both Western and Chinese planes in PAF, the communication systems on ZDK-03 uses a number of off the shelf Western components integrated by Chinese engineers with Chinese frontends and software.

5) A comprehensive ECM system was designed but it's unclear whether it made into the final version.

6) Command and control system. The poster won't say much for understandable reasons, but did mention enclosure and support for onboard computer systems make extensive use of carbon fibers developed for a ongoing helicopter project to reduce weight.

7) Platform. Uses WJ6C turboprop engines and JL-4 composite propellers. The poster claimed the platform has better endurance than the 'one certain Nordic AEW' sold to Pakistan and flies at a higher altitude as well.

That's pretty what I can gather from that thread. As my background is in a rather different field I'm not sure if I've got everything translated correctly. I think the source is a very credible one as he posted these information early this year and everything he said matches the recently revealed photo of ZDK-03.

I don't care what the exact specs of ZDK03 are, because what ever they are, they would be at least equal to or superior to SAAB system.

The thing is that again, Pakistan got what it wanted, like it wanted, from China.

Which makes the sophistication of J-10 a much more realistic scenario.

China hands over first ZDK-03 AEW&C aircraft to Pakistan

Farhan Bokhari JDW Correspondent - Islamabad

China has handed over the first of four ZDK-03 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft to the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in a significant step that will enhance the targeting abilities of the PAF's recently acquired JF-17 fighter aircraft, co-produced by China and Pakistan.

Air Chief Marshall Rao Qamar Suleman, PAF chief of staff, attended the formal roll-out of the first ZDK-03 at Hanzhong, China, on 13 November.

Although neither China nor Pakistan have publicly disclosed a price tag for the ZDK-03 contract, a senior Pakistani government official told Jane's that the four aircraft would cost in the range of USD220 million to USD250 million.

Pakistan has also signed a contract with Swedish manufacturer Saab for four Saab 2000 AEW&C aircraft fitted with Ericsson's PS-890 Erieye radar system. The Erieye is fitted to the aircraft as a dorsal 'plank' antenna, whereas the ZDK-03's antenna is fitted in a rotor dome.

A senior Pakistani government official said the PAF's decision to purchase both Western and Chinese AEW&C aircraft reflected the air force's structure. Although it has a mix of new and older F-16 fighters, US sanctions following its nuclear tests in 1998 forced the PAF to increasingly turn to China, culminating in the JF-17 Thunder lightweight fighter programme. Pakistan has also considered the purchase of up to two squadrons of China's J-10 fighter.

"The PAF has discovered that the capabilities of both AEW&C aircraft complement each other, so the ZDK-03 and the Saabs can work side by side," a Pakistani government official told Jane's . "Chinese fighter planes are increasingly central to the way the PAF is structured, so acquiring Chinese AEW&Cs was a very natural choice for us," he added.

None of the officers inthe photo above seem physically fit to me - not trying to be mean to them, it's just that they don't seem like they have missed many meals.

And what's up with those uniforms, these are officers not chaprasis.

Entire PAF on a diet and PT, and please get them hair cuts so they look like soldiers, well except the women (they won't appreciate the haircut thing).

Muse these are Senior Members with Senior Ranks they are not your entry level officers , so their fitness is reflective of their Age

:pakistan:

Our Youth Officers have the proper fitness and health and haircut and every thing to knock out enemy's teeth out

Senior Members offer experience which is vital for success of any defence

Induction of China made AEW&C to bring improvement in PAF defence operation: Rao

ZHUHAI, NOV 21 (APP): The introduction of China’s made ZDK-03 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft will bring a revolution in our air defence operation, said Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Chief of Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) here.

He expressed these views in an interview with APP on the sides lines of the 8th China Aviation and Aerospace exhibition.

The air show that held at China’s southern coastal city of Zhuhai concluded on Sunday.

Before arriving here, the PAF Chief attended the roll-out ceremony held in Hanzhong for first Shaanxi ZDK-03 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft designed specifically for Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

PAF has plans to induct a total of four Shaanxi ZDK-03 AEW&C aircraft in its inventory.

Those countries having no AEW&C aircraft they mostly rely on ground base radar system. The ground base radar system, he said has “very serious limitations in terms of their surveillance and detections”.

On the contrary, he said that AEW&C has the capability of detection for hundreds of miles.

Highlighting the importance of the AEW&C, Rao Qamar said that it can detect quite early any object flying from the enemy side and you can take action to counter the threat.

So, the Air chief Marshal said that it is a revolution that will come in PAF air defence operation after induction of AEW&C aircrafts.

“There are very few countries in the world having AEW&C technology using in their air forces”, he noted.

A proud Air Marshal pointed out that PAF will now also join the rank of these countries.

He said that the delivery of some of the AEW&C aircraft from Sweden has started, but the Chinese aircraft will begin joining PAF from the first quarter of the next year.

If China was giving is AWACS, why did we then buy Swedish AWACS?

Do they perform different functions?

I think Swedish AWACS number was cut down to accommodate the Chinese AWACS and previous Air Marshall had differences with General Musharaaf about it.

It gives PAF the plus point of comparing the best it has from western sources with the Chinese option and learn and make changes as per its requirements, since western option is expensive as well as has some other conditions attached to it.

And another major reason was the compatibility with F-16s, most probably ZDK-03 would not be compatible with the F-16s, while Erieye would be. So if we had just one Chinese platform, F-16s would have been without any aerial AEW&C support, which could be a major handicap in F-16s operational performance.

If China was giving is AWACS, why did we then buy Swedish AWACS?

Do they perform different functions?

1. to get hands on comparable tech and set evaluation bench marks
2. assist china with reverse engineering the product
3. All western tech comes with strings attached..PA has been on a duo weaponization scheme of buy western tech for defense and chinese for offense.

Hi,

If it is available---pakistan millitary will always try to go for the best weapons system---for the funds they have.

Eyeriye is one of the best systems in its class---. It gives us an insight into the best of the best in class systems and brings in a hands on experience as well---on which you cannot put any value---. Just the exposure to the technology is worhtwhile.

The chinese systems gives us diversity---. Also it keeps the western suppliers on their toes---the threat of sanctions also gets diminished as well.

You need to understand that if you are not exposed to the mechanix of high end complex machinery---how would to learn to operate one---think of manufacturing one---.

If you want to judge the character of a man and a nation---then check out its engineering provess and achievements---just look at the end product---and you got the answer.

???????????1???????ZDK03???

We know that aircrfts have different sizes, I am pretty sure when we talk about 700km range, we talk about detecting large aircraft the size of bombers. Therefore, what my source said makes sense here.
:pakistan:

3 Phalcons are enough to cover whole of india, i heard this on some tv channel. If ZDK 03 range is 700 km, then Phalcons range must be alteast 1000 km. Which is better ? ZDK 03 or Phalcon ?
