Pardon me for asking a very basic question, not related to religion or such. All those thousands of people kiss the stone at the same place? Is there a method to wipe the stone clean (or disinfect it with some solution) after each person kisses it, before the next one can?

I don't think so....never been there...Don't know if they have disinfectants inside the silver covering(Saudis do have high tech stuff i the mosque)....People are not required to kiss it....if they still wanna do it then they can knock themselves out...And thousands of people cannot make it to the rock....its really small....I am sure they clean it when the crowds get lighter.
