Bangladesh goes tough against men stalking women, girls

Girls should be trained for basic self defense against pricks in their schools.

Assumption:

I think it's easy to arrest the eve teasers than the rapists. Because, most of eve teasers are poor young boys in the villages and most of rapists are involved with politics. So AL is eye-washing by arresting these poor and young eve teasers to show up that we are doing something, lol.

Govt needs to censor Hindi and Bengali movies which promote eve teasing as a way of offering love.

Govt. iz not gonna do that. They simply has no time for that.

Stalker kills victim's father

A stalker allegedly hacked a father to death at Bahadurpur village under Motlob North upazila of the district Tuesday night for protesting harassment of his school-going daughter and marring her off.

The deceased identified as Monir Hossain, 45, of Bahadurpur village, was a fish trader at Jatrabari of the capital.

Abdul Hannan, 20, son of Ali Ahmed of the same village, has been harassing Monir's daughter Tania Akter on her way to school for years.

Locals alleged Hannan waylaid Monir Tuesday night when Monir was returning from Shikirchar to Bahadurpur after crossing a canal on boat.

Witness Nibaronnesa, 60, wife of Mobarak Bapari from neighbourhood, said she was with Monir on boat. Within few steps after getting off the boat, she heard someone screaming.

Later, locals found Monir lying in a pool of blood, she added. He died while he was being taken to a hospital.

Tania said Hannan used to stalk her when she was a student of Sharif Ullah High School in Bahadurpur. Hannan even sent a marriage proposal to her family, but the family declined it. Angered at the denial, Hannan threatened to kill Monir if he did not marry his daughter to Hannan.

“My father brought me to the capital to escape the harassment and admitted me to Muradur High School,” she said.

But it did not bring any solution as Hannan also came to Dhaka and took a job in a grocery shop in Jatrabari. He again started harassing Tania on her way to school.

On November 25, Monir took Tania to the village and resorted to marrying her off to someone from Daudkandi the same day.

Tania said Hannan has been threatening to kill her father since the marriage. Several complaints against the stalker were made earlier to the union parishad member and other local people but to no avail.

Officer-in-Charge Rustom Ali of North Motlob Police Station said the stalker went into hiding after the killing, and the police were trying to arrest him.

Fatema Begum, wife of the dead, yesterday filed a case with the police station.

Bangladesh goes tough against men stalking women, girls

21:47, November 10, 2010

Bangladesh's Ministry of Home Affairs Wednesday said men stalking of women and girls will be punished with one-year imprisonment or fine or both as the South Asian country's government has amended law to pave the way for stern action against offenders.

Md. Sahenor Miah, senior spokesman of the ministry, told Xinhua Wednesday that the government on Tuesday amended the country's " Mobile Court Act 2009" empowering the mobile courts to try offenders of stalking girls or women summarily.

"The new law will come into effect as soon as a gazette notification is published. We hope that the gazette notification will be published within a day or two," Miah said.

In the wake of an alarming rise in stalking of women by unruly men, he said the government has also decided to set mobile courts in operation in every district of the country.

Stalking of women in Bangladesh has taken a severe turn during the last couple of months particularly with a growing number of people being murdered or maimed for their efforts to resist the menace.

In last nine months, according to a recent report of a local rights group Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 25 women committed suicide to escape the horror of abuse, while nine males, including a college teacher, lost their lives for standing up against stalkers.

ASK, a national level legal aid and human rights organization, also reports that around 131 women were assaulted by their stalkers and 54 males came under attack for protesting teasing.
