They may object to the ejection seat as it is made in the UK, but an alternative ejection seat is available to bypass this. I am not an aviation person and I have been told about this from another source, so forgive my limited knowledge on the matter.

In the anti ship role, JF-17 Block 3 is big threat to British Type 45.

A CM-400AKG might badly damage it but the current C-802AKG that I assume is being exported won't be a huge threat unless it's a saturation attack big enough to overwhelm the 48 cell VLS and 2 CIWS on the ship. You'd have to fly a large number of JF-17s at once to do that because it can only carry 2 AShMs. I don't think Argentina will risk flying most of their JF-17s at once just for one ship, which will be escorted by other ships which will likely also try to intercept incoming AShMs and JF-17s.

And, in all probability this will be the FC1 Block III variant - ie all Chinese systems and not the J17 Block III which contains a number of western systems and ejection seats, etc. Pakistan was the lead in Nigeria, Aezerbijan, Malysia etc and China was the lead in Argentina.

Dodgy reporting to me - lets see - but I have seen China do all the grunt work which makes me think this is a pure Chinese variant ie FC-1.

Even the Chinese leads such as Myanmar, had parts manufactured in Pakistan. I am pretty sure Pakistan will be leading training and integration for AAF just like NAF.

Yesterday, the draft budget for fiscal year 2022 was presented to the National Congress, which includes a request of US$ 664 million for the acquisition of JF-17 Thunder Block III fighters.

Thus, it is now clear which is the choice of the Argentine Air Force (FAA) for its next supersonic fighter, discarding the offers from Russia, USA and India.




The budget requested would be enough for the purchase of 12 JF-17 Thunder in its latest and most modern standard, taking into account the rumored price of 50 million per unit (which the Government would have tried to lower). Also, within this U$S 664 million, 20 million are contemplated for the repair and modernization of the runways and infrastructure that would host the new aircrafts.

So far, this is the clearest sign in favor of the Chinese option, which evidences the Air Force’s firm intention to complete the purchase as soon as possible. However, no one can claim victory yet. Until the contract is signed and the first funds are disbursed, there may still be counter-offers from other countries.

And it should also be remembered that in 2015, during Agustín Rossi’s first term as Argentina’s Minister of Defense, a budget of U$D 360 million had been authorized for the purchase of 14 IAI Kfir, which was then frozen in view of the imminent change of government. And finally, the administration of President Mauricio Macri decided to dismiss the acquisition of the Israeli fighters.

Therefore, the presence of the Thunder in the 2022 budget should be taken only as a purchase intention (a serious and firm indication, that’s for sure), and not as a deal already closed. One cannot underestimate the current economic and political situation in the country, in which the incorporation of modern weapon systems may not be seen as a priority.

The UK does not want sophisticated defense technology to get into the hands of Argentines since the Falkland war. The UK is also on the warpath with the Chinese. I think the Chinese have pushed really hard for this deal (using CATIC visits for this purpose) as a response to UK for undermining Chinese interests apart from its aim of entering the Latin American weapons market.

Argentina was interested in American options such as F/A-18s or F-16s but was refused in the 1990s:

Word is that Lockeed Martin pitched F-16s to Argentina at some point:

Approval comes from American Congress however. Therefore, I am not clear on American pitch to Argentina. You might be better informed in this case.

Argentina showed much interest in JAS-39E in 2014 but could not get it.

Argentina then focused on FA-50 but UK vetoed this option for it.

Poor Argentina.

JF-17 Block 3 might be it then. Let us see.

The attractiveness of JF-17 is not only based on its price but the ability of the operator country to use it the way they want, with the weapons they want, without fear of sanctions and without the denial of sophisticated weapons and sub systems.

The UK hasn't had to try hard. They have been successful without even trying. Argentina has not been a threat for 30 years now and will take at least another Fifteen to twenty years to even start. Their problems are deeper than just having a few Aircraft
