What's new

Another milestone of Turkish Aerospace: TAI's New Supersonic UAV Göksungur Waiting 2020

I think there's confusion. Göksungur will fly at a speed of 380 km.

Nah that's the max speed of the Peregrine Falcon. Aksungur translates to Gyrfalcon which has a max speed of around 200km/h whereas the Göksungur, the Peregrine Falcon, has a max speed of 380km/h.

Official sources from TAI have made it clear that it will be supersonic. The 380km/h thing was a mix up by some Turkish sources that was carried on by English defense websites too.

Bro, Avenger’s shape can not reach supersonic speeds. Göksungur will have a loyal wingmen supersonic drone concept to escort Turkish TF-X fighters. They are going to carry electronic warfare sensors to suspension enemy radar and air defense batteries. The drone will introduce itself like big target something similar to a fighter (F-4/16) to be an open target while activating the electronic warfare sensors to jam them. When wingmen operation completed succesfully, The drones will land on airbases. The Göksungur will have a weight around 100kg and a speed of 1600km/h.

Pakistan should collaborate on this project as a vendor later on (or in R&D now if possible.)

This is a good project and I have several times advocated for something similar here as a SOW carrier/ drone tanker and for EW roles.

This would help our lighter aircrafts to have additional firepower at lower operating costs.

Now, AI (Artificial Intelligence) would play a great role!!! It's up to the "data set" and "correlations" being constantly fed into the "learning engines"!!! Given the PAF flying tactics, regimes etc. being constantly updated so would be these machines'!! In the Indo-Pak scenario, if the contested airspace can be filled with these "drones" with their on-the-fly EW/SIGINT/WVR/BVR capabilities the PAF pilots' job will get much easier to accomplish the goals...

A healty competion between TAI and BAYKAR is a great advantage for Turkey but I just hope it will not turn in to a PR mess! we know that there is an ongoing project in a way similar to MALD (aerial decoy drone)

But an actual supersonic UAV i.e with Mach 1 + speed (1200 + Kilometers per Hour)is still a quantum leap not only for Turkey but for the most, even if they can come up with a high subsonic this will take us to a whole new level. Anyway I am looking forward to see what they will come up with!

I think he is talking about the speed for the actual birds themselves here. According to Google, the peregrine falcon (Goksungur) has a top speed of 390 km/ph even (while diving). For Gyrfalcon (Aksungur) it is 240 km according to Google search.

Baykar MIUS will be a high subsonic drone travelling at 900km/h

Meanwhile the Göksungur will be supersonic, surpassing 1600km/h

In my opinion these two projects should go for two different routes. One should be a bomber and the other should be a CAS aircraft that uses a heavy rotating gun to strike ground targets. Pretty much an unmanned A10.

The Göksungur should be the bomber which enters deep into enemy territory at a fast speed. It could be used like an F16 or F4 and could have the ability to take on other aircraft too.

The MIUS on the otherhand is much slower. It should have a belly which is immune to small arms fire. It should still be able to carry bombs but I think if we integrated a canon it would be amazing. Bombing targets is fine but some situations call for an automatic canon. A drone has an advantage due less of a fear of getting taken down. Therefore it could prove to be a game changer. Imagine it swooping down on convoys and clearing entire groups of enemies in a single gun-run.

I like you to have ambitious products in your mind, me also kinda love to design things which is not exist, you should keep it that way. In the end, military officers and decision-makers will decide about such stuff since we don't have unlimited funds.

What I am against is the last sentence. "Being superpower" as a term for developing countries is usually is a laughing stock for others. We should not use this term if we ever aim the beyond being just superpower. My humble opinion.

Lmao well I only use the term "superpower" when talking to fellow Turks. But yeah it is pretty funny when people say Turkey will become a superpower in 2023 or especially when Indians say "India superpower 2020"

I dont think that small arms fire can reach the altitudes of the drones we're speaking about here.

If TAI uses AL-25 turbofan engine (like Baykar) for Göksungur (Kokpitaero states), It means We are going to see something different than a target drone(our previous consideration). In this condition, I believe TAI will reveal a jet powered drone which has advanced features for mostly AG missions. I suppose It will have a conventional wing design to stay on air longer times. A 6ton MTOW with Al-25T (3800lbf) will be a convenient power to weight figure to develop somerhing similar to Talarion or Avenger(7t, 4500lbf) because What TAI will reveal will be in same class with them.

On the other hand, Bayraktar is going to reveal something more agile, speedy and stealth drone which is going to have sharp design lines but It will be relatively smaller(3,5-4t) than Göksungur to meet the criterias of the missions that is envisaged under the name of “unmanned fighter aircraft”. Bayraktar MIUS will carry mostly Bozdoğan and Gökdoğan WVR/BVR missiles on combat duties flying at the wing formation close to TF-X MMU having continous connection to TF-X pilots. MIUS should be the fearless hero of air combats which will intervene the air combats before big brother TF-X. To perform such difficult duties, I believe Baykar will design a good stealth airframe with flight/mission computers embedded with artificial intelligence algorithms to make it cope with Russian and European manned fighters on air.

From everything I've seen the Baykar MIUS is set to be subsonic. Which is strange because as you've stated they have also hinted that it will be an "unmanned jet". If it really is meant to take on other jets then I'm guessing they made a mistake and in reality it will be supersonic.
