These are Hong Kong's covid-19 heroes.
I don't say it in jest.
The protest disruptions drove people away from Hong Kong, including international visitors.
In particular, mainland traffic slowed to a trickle even before covid-19 was reported.
This saved Hong Kong from the first wave of cases, and many mainlanders spent their New Year in Singapore instead.
That is the reason why Singapore had more cases initially.
The second wave was brought about by Singapore's hub status as SEA's premier healthcare provider, and the region's lack of resources in handling epidemics.
The third wave of cases from the prosperous west was shared with Hong Kong as residents fled home as schools and work shut down.
Singapore is now experiencing a fourth wave of infections from a direction no one, not even the WHO is looking at--india. We are discovering big clusters of infections at foreign worker dormitories.
Simply put, singapore employs way more foreigners as a proportion of the workforce from ASEAN and other countries. We also process more than one singapore worth of passengers every month at Changi and operate the world's busiest land links at 500k trips each way per day.
We remained open for more than 3 months but the external situation has deteriorated beyond our expectation.
I think we did ok, measured against Taiwan and Hong Kong.
