US panel calls for Pakistan membership of G-20

If you want to go by the logic then G20 should only contain top 20 economies, then some of the countries that currently are in G20 shouldn't be there.

If Pakistan's growth rate picks up in the coming years to anywhere over 5% - which is expected by 2012 -, and G-20 is to be expanded, then Pakistan could be one of the countries to get in.

Also, naturally if G-20 is expanded then it won't be G-20 anymore, maybe G-25 or G-30.

Also, the correct way to go about this would to measure it by GDP PPP, not nominal. I believe South Africa has just slightly more GDP PPP than Pakistan.

Just an observation here. Pakistanis must get out of this habit of using PPP when it suits them, and nominal values when it suits them. India is the 4th largest economy in the world then, but no Pakistani will agree to compare by PPP when the discussion veers in that direction.

And coming to your actual point, you are totally wrong. GDP PPP is a useful mechanism only to compute standards of living and population below poverty line, and such things. When it comes to comparisons with other countries, economic clout, and other things, GDP nominal is the only sensible thing to look at, GDP PPP makes absolutely no sense there. So Pakistan is 46th, India is 10th.

If Pakistan is the 45th biggest economy, that means there are 44 countries with more economic clout than Pakistan. And I bet those countries are a lot more stable as well.

If Pakistan joins the G20 the whole organization would lose its credibility and become even more useless than it is now.

If India has a dozen insurgencies and G20 has not lost credibility, then G20 should be OK.

Look there are many G20 countries who are good friends with us, if they want us to be a member, whats the problem with you lot. We Pakistanis are fairly laid back about it. :azn:

Well I am not an economic expert so I could be wrong about the difference between nominal and PPP, but I am lead to believe that GDP PPP is more important for these things. If nominal GDP is what matters then there are some countries far more deserving then say, South Africa, to be in G20.

And I don't see the issue if India is supposed to be the 4th biggest economy.

But again I have to repeat this. It's not Pakistanis calling for this to happen. ;)

^^ If US wants Pakistan in G20..How does it matter to India? I would think the other 25 countries before Pakistan might have a beef with it, but not India. Lets see if it passes through..

Also some of the Pakistanis are wrong here... Its not US who is asking for it.. but a panel suggested it..thats all...

But why are so many indians concerned.

It looks like a deal to make Pakistan happy to side with US for the WoT.
But I feel a better and stable economy for Pakistan will be helpful for India as well.

Might as well have Somalia, Guinea, Mali, Chad, Nigeria, Sierra Leone part of the G20 as well, I've heard they'll each become Regional/Global Powers within the next couple of years..

Why are you trolling? Its the US panel which is calling for a Pakistani membership at G-20 and not the other way round. Get a life troll

Why would other 25 countries have a beef with Pakistan joining the organization? Care to explain?

Because they all have better economies than Pakistan. After all G20 is an economic forum not the political one. Won't they would all want to join G20 if Pakistan is allowed..Get it..
