India probably did not intervene military in 1971 because of the Emergency in that country. Already Indira Gandhi was having a difficult time justifying the emergency so a military intervention soon after would have been disastrous politically.

What will happen? Aliens will come to invade BD?
Mir Jaffar thought that by betraying his empire, he'd get a high position after the British sweeped in. In the end, he didn't get any.
History repeats itself I guess.
@Loki , U do realise that U are arguing with an Indian, right?
Too much BBC and fox news is bad for health
why we didn't have any choice??please explain..we are not in charge of BD,nor we are bound to do that..are we??BD is a self sufficient country..and I didn't say BD was begging..I only pointed out the amout of economical assistance India gave to BD,that was the question of a pakistani member..anyway,as Loki said, back to the topic..
To answer, I can only say BD has become the focal point of Asia that starts at the India-Pakistan border and ends at Vietnam. Open the map and see where BD lies in. So, ASEAN, China as well as India - all have a stake in BD. India cannot even go to its own NE without BD assistance. It cannot expect a fruitful integration of NE with the mainland, and of the mainland itself with ASEAN economy without BD giving multiple sea, river and land routes.
India cannot even access China without BD first giving a land route. So, for India's own economic sake, it should resolve all the border and water disputes with BD, and come and court BD with tons of dollars that it needs to develop the required infrastructure.
India, Myanmar, Thailand road connection by 2016
India, Asean aim to rebuild road, sea connectivity
we completely bypassed BD,we don't even need you.we selected Mayanmar to connect Asean.
1.Re-1975 coup. This was organized by CIA. Sheikh and his govt's security was being ensured by Indians under Brig Vohra. Indian intel had obviously withdrawn their security umbrella for the coup to take place. As such there never was any fear of Indian intervention.
2. Also remember, in Aug 1975 Pakistan and China had not reconciled with the creation of BD. As such there was no reason for them to intervene also. In Aug the Himalayan passes are not snow-blocked.
3. Just after the coup, the number two man in the coup, Rashid had visited Army HQ and assured the DMO that they had ensured that there would be no Indian interference.
4. Also vitally important to understand is that Sheikh Mujib's politics was pro-Two Nation Theory. In the international arena he had gained a stature beyond Indira Gandhi's. The Bengalees of India were also looking up-to him as their leader. India was very much involved in the killing of the Sheikh.
India cannot just bypass Bangladesh. Throw away all those trash tea sipping meeting reports to the gutter. We have seen already how you have developed that hilly siliguri corridor for the last 65 years when India is pulling off its hairs and begging BD to give a transit via its Ctg port and Akhaura. Why would India beg us if your links are such important?
Grow up boy and do not let all those Dehliwala politicians deceive you for another 65 years. BD will remain the focal point of trades among ASEAN, China and India. Instead of a 2500 km of detour through rebel infested NE, India should go for ocean transportation.
@eastwatch, what I saw in the Shahbag protests is that the middle class youth going after the culprits - the politicians are bound to use the mileage, the atrocities have happened and by due process BDians have identified the culprits - to be honest I am not much aware of BD's internal politics but was mightily impressed with the progressive population of BD who demanded extreme punishment to the one's who helped in unleashing the torture and saw a new dawn in BD - but then it got somewhat sidelined with petty politics and the Islamic parties jumping in and the unnecessary violence. I hope the millions who suffered in the 1971 pogrom get justice in the end and BD evolves to be a moderate state where Islamo fascists do not have a place.
Can you give some links supporting your wild claims?
And if Mujib was pro Two Nation Theory why the heck would Indian Hindu Bengalis look up to him. This is a contradictory statement you make.
Indian Hinu Bengalles had begun worshiping him as an avatar of Netaji. They found in the Sheikh a man who would assist them in getting out of the Brahmonic dictatorship of Delhi.
