Şamilgil had submitted her project, which makes it possible to measure the amount of water in liquids by a magnetic system, to a competition by Turkey's Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) but it was not picked as a promising project.

At the moment, Şamilgil resides in the United States and studies at Cornell University. She was recently picked by her Professor, Mason Peck, who is also a technology supervisor at NASA, to be included in the Mars project.
