Egypt accepts Turkey request to convene in NY: Spokesperson

Egypt and Turkey will meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Meeting amid strained relations

Ahram Online, Tuesday 23 Sep 2014

Egypt has accepted Turkey's request to convene a bilateral meeting in New York to discuss highly strained relations between both nations, according to an Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman.

Ambassador Badr Abdel-Ati said the meeting will take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, which will be attended by Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and other Egyptian dignitaries.

"The meeting will be exploratory and all issues shall be discussed," he told Al-Hayat TV late Monday.

Bilateral ties between Egypt and Turkey have significantly worsened following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood had strong relations with Turkish authorities during his presidency.

Hopefully we see a turn around in relations :)

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has said Turkey has requested a meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly meetings, currently in session in New York.

“Turkey asked for a meeting with the Egyptian side on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session,” ministry spokesman Badr Abdel-Ati told a local television channel late Sept. 23.
Abdel-Ati said the offer had been accepted by Cairo.

“Egypt has agreed to the meeting because there is no animosity toward or problems with the Turkish people,” he added.

The meeting would bring together Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Çavuşoğlu, the spokesman said.

It will be the first direct talks since the military ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi, which has been repeatedly denounced by Ankara. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has several times accused Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of “hijacking the people’s will.”

Commentators have recently noted Ankara’s willing to thaw the severed ties between both countries.
The Egyptian spokesman said he expected talks to touch on bilateral relations and regional developments.

Last November, Egypt downgraded its diplomatic relations with Turkey to the level of chargé d’affaires and recalled its ambassador from Ankara. Turkey responded with similar measures.

Egypt blasts Turkish President Erdoğan after UN speech

Egypt has accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of supporting terrorists and seeking to provoke mayhem in the Middle East after he questioned the legitimacy of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in a speech at the U.N. General Assembly.

Ties between Ankara and Cairo have been strained since then army chief el-Sisi toppled elected President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood last year after mass protests against his rule.

Egyptian security forces then mounted one of the fiercest crackdowns against the Islamist movement, killings hundreds of supporters at a Cairo protest camp, arresting thousands and putting Morsi and other leaders on trial trial.

After world leaders gathered at the United Nations, Erdoğan delivered a speech which featured stinging criticism of el-Sisi's rise and what he called inaction after Morsi's overthrow.

"Again, those objecting [to] the murders in Iraq, Syria and the murder of democracy in Egypt are subjected to certain unfair and groundless accusations and almost immediately accused of supporting terrorism," said Erdoğan.

"The United Nations as well as the democratic countries have done nothing but watch the events such as overthrowing the elected president in Egypt and the killings of thousands of innocent people who want to defend their choice. And the person who carried out this coup is being legitimized."

In a statement, Egypt's foreign ministry dismissed Erdogan's comments on el-Sisi.

"There is no doubt that the fabrication of such lies and fabrications are not something strange that comes from the Turkish President, who is keen to provoke chaos to sow divisions in the Middle East region through its support for groups and terrorist organizations," the foreign ministry said.

"Whether political support or funding or accommodation in order to harm the interests of the peoples of the region to achieve personal ambitions for the Turkish president and revive illusions of the past."

Erdoğan's comments prompted Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri to cancel a meeting on the sidelines of the General Assembly with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, according to the statement.

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood has close ties with Erdoğan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Turkey has emerged as one of the fiercest international critics of Morsi's removal, calling it an "unacceptable coup" by the army.

"If we defend democracy, then let's respect the ballot box. If we will defend those who come to power not with democracy but with a coup then I wonder why this U.N. exists," Erdoğan said in his speech.

Both the fall of the Muslim Brotherhood and the advance of Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has drawn regional countries into sectarian and ideological conflicts destabilizing the Middle East.

Ankara has backed Syrian rebel groups fighting Assad but strongly denies any suggestion that it has supported ISIL or other radical Islamist militants, saying they pose a major security threat to Turkey.

Egypt has been at odds with both Turkey and Qatar over the political transformation in the biggest Arab country since a popular uprising toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Egypt says el-Sisi's removal of the Brotherhood was not a coup, arguing that he was responding to the will of the Egyptian people after they rejected his troubled one-year rule.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Gulf Arab oil producers who feel threatened by the Brotherhood, have showered Egypt with billions of dollars since Morsi's exit.

Sisi's opponents accuse him of returning Egypt to an authoritarian past with widespread human rights abuses.

Apparently those comments scuppered the meeting between the two diplomatic delegations there (as well as leading to the frankly ridiculous statement made by the Egyptian FM over reacted way too much IMO).

Is something else at play here? Why would Erdo undermine his own foreign ministry, when it was Turkey that called for the meeting.

What else but supporting his MB brothers?

Turkey is started to be regarded as another trouble maker middle eastern country, and therefore The West start to relate Turkey with some claims after some news about western intelligence spying into Turkey.

German media is now saying that Turkey is looking to build Nuclear weapons and is in the process of funding for enriched Uranium Project.

Western media has always reported negatively about Turkey, now they've gone full retard.

German media is a zionist clown show.

nucler weapons ? we need it.

The western media had for almost a decade supported The AKP and Erdoğan; at that time They were altogether praising The Akp, and were showing the AKP as an example for The middle eastern countries as rolemodel. Mr Zero problem Davutoğlu was praised by the same western leaders for his role in The ME. What happened those days?

It seems some people forgot that fact, and try to Picture them(the West) as enemy of Turkey; but in reality they are now against the AKP and Erdoğan, not Turkey. The visits of Erdoğan to European countries are not met with a big hug as before. Even some poiticians in power have openly made negative comments about those visits.

At this moment The West steps further and puts Turkey into a middle eastern category. Are they wrong? I do not think so.

as if the average westerner ever regarded us as fellow Europeans to begin with :disagree: decades of humiliating 'EU membership' fallacy is another good example. what is wrong with 'middle eastern' category? because of being associated with Arabs? islam? terrorism? geographically Turkey is indeed in the ME (Asia) and culturally/genetically I'd consider us as Eurasians. that said, i dont believe US and west european countries (EU decision-makers) are honest and sincere with us, akp or not, as the history has clearly shown. you make it sound like a case of you (Turkey) being rejected by a girl (West), but you still belief that she truly loves you, only to be used by her when it suits her and being backstabbed when it suits her. time to move on, adapt to life and find a new girl.
