At the IDEAS 2024 defense exhibition, Turkey's TUSAS (Turkish Aerospace Industries) showcased a scale model of its advanced KAANfighter jet, representing a significant milestone in Turkey's aerospace capabilities. The KAAN is a fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter designed to enhance Turkey's air superiority and combat capabilities.

Key Features of the KAAN Fighter Jet:

  • Stealth and Performance: The KAAN is equipped with advanced stealth technology, featuring a low radar cross-section (RCS) that allows it to operate effectively in contested airspaces. It can achieve speeds exceeding Mach 2 and has a combat radius of approximately 1,000 nautical miles.
  • Advanced Avionics: The jet boasts cutting-edge avionics, including a high-resolution cockpit display and helmet-mounted systems that provide pilots with enhanced situational awareness. The integration of an advanced AESA radar system will facilitate automatic target recognition and multi-target tracking.
  • Diverse Armament: The KAAN is designed to carry a variety of weapons, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. It will be armed with indigenous munitions such as the Gökdoğan and Bozdoğan missiles, as well as precision-guided munitions for ground attack roles.
  • Multi-Role Capabilities: This fighter jet is not limited to air-to-air combat but is also capable of conducting ground strikes and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Its versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of operational scenarios.
  • Development Timeline: The KAAN completed its maiden flight on February 21, 2024, achieving an altitude of 8,000 feet and a speed of 230 knots during its initial test. The first units are expected to be delivered to the Turkish Air Force by 2028, with plans for mass production thereafter.
  • International Collaboration: The project has seen contributions from global defense leaders like BAE Systems, enhancing its technological edge. Countries such as Azerbaijan and Pakistan have expressed interest in acquiring the KAAN, indicating its potential for international partnerships.
The unveiling of the KAAN at IDEAS 2024 highlights Turkey's ambitions in developing indigenous military technology and its commitment to enhancing national defense capabilities through self-sufficiency in advanced aerospace systems.
