The amount of fuel and chemical energy storage needed for a day or two of sustained peak op's tempo will make that carrier go out in a spectacular explosion with a single hit.

In contrast, the USS Gerald Ford can launch aircrafts all day long without consuming any fuel and it fully recharges the launch system in 45 seconds.

That seems unlikely considering its dimensions are slightly smaller than Gerald Ford class with 1 less catapult and elevator. It's not the first time CCAV messed up their reporting.

Take a look at the actual picture. The no-load waterline of 003 is 12.9 meters (not the 11.5 meters originally estimated). I can see the logic of using gas as a fast starting generator for peak load with EMALS, and being able to use smaller reactors otherwise for base load.

its never been done before. The only other conventional + reactor hybrid is Kirov which uses steam boilers that are shared with the reactor.

Actually, I really want to see Shandong be modified to equip with at least one catapult on the side. This way, it will allow fixed wing AWAC to take off.

I think this may be a possibility at the midlife upgrade, to add a catapult to the angle deck. It will be a good upgrade for the 001 and 002 especially combined with a refueling drone to allow the J-15s to take off with minimum fuel, then fill fuel while in the air.
