Saudi Arabia is considering cooperation with China and Pakistan in the development and production of the FC-1 Xiaolong multirole fighter jet, also known as the JF-17 Thunder, according to Military Parade, a website covering defense issues based in Russia.

General Raheel Sharif, the chief of staff of Pakistan's armed forces, ordered a JF-17 aerial maneuver display to welcome a military delegation from Saudi Arabia led by the country's deputy defense minister Prince Salman bin Sultan on Jan. 20, the site reported. The website's source said the representatives from the Royal Saudi Air Force have been eager to learn the details of the production of the JF-17 in Pakistan since 2013. The fighter was jointly designed by China and Pakistan.

As Pakistan is a major military partner to both China and Saudi Arabia, Military Parade said the South Asian country plays a key role in introducing Chinese weapons system to members of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf made up of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. In addition to providing advanced aircraft, tanks and submarines to these nations, Pakistan is also able to transfer Chinese military technology.

Military Parade was also informed that a representative from the Saudi delegation said that the Royal Saudi Air Force is interested in starting a new project based on the design of the fighter. Whether true or not, the website concluded that greater military cooperation between China and Arab nations will take place in the future with Pakistan as the agent.

you forgot the source mate ;)

What role do the Saudis plan for it, interceptor? They already have an inventory of about 400 air superiority aircrafts, in service and on order.

Replace their F-5s. Also thunder can provide them with open system where they can integrate weapons of their choice. Read through the discussion things like this are already posted and discussed.

I thought F-5s are being replaced by Eurofighters. Agree with the weapon choice part but how big of an airforce do they want, given the size of the country, surrounding allies with good airforce, and USA. Too lazy to go through 20 pages.

Yeah, that was my point, pretty big airforce. And all of them good fighters, F-15 and Eurofighter.

Hi-Lo mix my friend...Hi-Lo mix..

Saudi Arabian Air Force has F-15s, Eurofighters, Tornadoes, and F-5s.

Replace F-5s with JF-17 Thunder

Make sense now? :azn:

Future JF-17 blocks can also be used to replace Tornadoes etc...but still..

Most importantly, Saudis will get indigenous skills by joining JF-17 program...

Lets see what happens...

I am awed, they have about 300 F-15 and Eurofighters, in service and on order. And yet they want more! They don't even have any concrete threat from any enemy, yet...

They are also eyeing the creation of an air wing for the Saudi Arabian National Guard. Which will focus on defensive operations and provide a second tier to their primary forces. However, they do seem to have little need for more aircraft if the additional 72 typhoons go ahead. That will give them some 230 odd F-15s and 144 Typhoons.. Those assets seem enough to offer credible defence for critical Saudi areas unless further urban and industrial expansion is undertaken.

They have ambitions whats wrong with it? This move if made will help them setup the aviation industry which will in turn help their economy. Thunder can also be used as test plate farm for their other defense projects, its not just about the enemy. Thunder operational costs are low compared to EFT. They can use them as workhorse and save hours on EFT and other expensive jets. Also this move will bring KSA closer to china pakistan nexus.

Not to forget that the JF-17s they will get won't be the ordinary pieces. They will be pimped up, especially for their needs.

Okey....pakistani member says saudi are eyeing for JF 17...but why..they can buy much superior jets from west..which will be much more advance and reliable,...
so, what's in there for saudis in Jf 17....
