this means Ukraine has already lost the war- how do we know this? because Ukraine has lost the ground war, because it now sees fighting from the air as its only potential hope to recover its position vis-a-vis Russian army in east Ukraine.

The moment any military has lost the ground war, its lost the war overall, we know this from US losses in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also from Saudis in Yemen- in all these situations, the wars were irreversibly lost and doomed the moment US and Saudi militaries relied primarily on airpower to fight their enemies- airpower didnt destroy Taliban in the end, it made US lose the war, and Saudis airforce hasnt been able to stop the Houthis- those wars were lost!!

Mighty Iran toppled Saddam regime in 2003, overcame Iraqi insurgency during the (2004 - 2008) period, and Iranian Air Force destroyed ISIL in Iraq during the (2014 - 2021) period. The world should learn from mighty Iran to fight a war.

Mighty Russia gave up in Afghanistan in 10 years in its first attempt. But mighty Russia came back with vengeance and did not leave Afghanistan until it eliminated perpetrators of 9/11 and its terms for peace were accepted by TTA.

I would still say it was an actual calculation.

It's clearly impossible to capture a country the size of Ukraine with 240k troops, even if it had much smaller military. That's borderline suicidal.

Afghanistan is larger than Ukraine and it was captured by Special Forces working with the Northern Alliance.

BY my guess it is more probable to see new russian offensive in summee time then ukrainian counteroffensive.
I do not buy this shit about depletion of russian armor and combat units.

Then why not for the Russian to continue with the current offensive? If they have the manpower and equipment to mount another one?

It's not at all optimal to stop your current counter offensive and let your enemy catches their breath and reground and then re-do them again.....

You don't need to serve in the military to know that.....

Ignoring the simpletons that think Bakhmut (53rd city of ukraine) falling after a year constitutes some major strategic victory for russia.

How are the F16s going to alter the battlefield?
The russian airforce is mostly MIA due to high initial losses and Ukraines air defence. However it did seem they switched tactic to long range missiles and glide bombs.

Are the F16 going to come with a set of missiles outranging the russians?
Or are they gonna use them more for Jdams/own glide bombs, or perhaps Harm-SEAD?

Depends on what comes with those F-16 and how many F-16 were given.

If they were given in meaningful number (like 48 or more) and comes with wide array of weapon (like ARMAAM, JDAM, EW Suite) then they can form enough squadron to do what the basic needs Which is to contest local air superiority, provide CAS, SEAD and EW.

If they were given in meaningful number but does just come with basic weapon (like older sidewinder and so on) then their role will be limited

But if they were given in a token number, then it does not matter what kind of weapon they are going with, it is not going to make a big different strategically, operationally and tactically may make impact because it is still a new platform the Russian is facing, which would alter their own playbook as to how they will fight the Ukrainian, and it will have direct impact on battlefield, because that was a net gain.
