Rafale warplane deal stalled, UAE says proposal "unworkable"

r

(Reuters) - A long-awaited French deal for Dassault (AVMD.PA) to sell at least 60 Rafale warplanes to the United Arab Emirates appeared to hit a roadblock on Wednesday after the Arab country's crown prince said proposed terms were "uncompetitive and unworkable."

The deal, which had been negotiated for the better part of a year, was thrown into doubt earlier this week when it became clear that the UAE had asked for details on a rival aircraft, the Typhoon built by the Eurofighter consortium.

"Thanks to President (Nicolas) Sarkozy, France could not have done more diplomatically or politically to secure the Rafale deal," Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, deputy of the country's armed forces, said in a statement, adding that Sarkozy's "personal intervention in this process has sustained Dassault at the forefront of our considerations."

"Regrettably Dassault seem unaware that all the diplomatic and political will in the world cannot overcome uncompetitive and unworkable commercial terms," he said.

A source close to the deal blamed the current impasse on the "arrogance" of Dassault, despite French military officials saying they were confident about securing a deal and hopes of finalising the sale at the Dubai Air Show.

"There is a shared frustration in both the UAE and French leaderships at the apparent arrogance of Dassault," the source said.

"Rather than using the strength of the bilateral relationship to close the deal out they are attempting to use it to hold out on pricing and a deal structure that hasn't changed in more than a year and that has been significantly bettered by all competitors."

French air chief General Jean-Paul Palomeros had told Reuters on Monday that the Emirates air force was "very keen with Rafale".

France is struggling to secure a foreign buyer for the aircraft, which is more developed than fourth generation combat aircraft but lags behind fifth generation multi-role fighters such as Lockheed Martin's (LMT.N) F-35 Lightning II.

The United Arab Emirates has pressed for the aircraft's engines to be upgraded with extra thrust and for better radar, industry sources have said, but Palomeros said UAE officials are satisfied with the plane.

Arabs now get what they want when the want the way they want them. If you don't give us the deal we want in our terms good bye there are other people in the market it is as simple as that. Apparently Dassault refused full ToT of the Rafale which was the UAE was hoping for.

Very bad year for Frenchies. Looks like decision of making relation bad with Pakistan appears to be acurse on them.

The kickbacks were probably too low.

Have you been to the UAE lately?? Have you seen how advanced that country is?? Their leaders are by far the best in the region if you ask me in the way they treat their people.

. . .
The only people the UAE shiekh's support is themselves, and their gora favs.
Ever wonder why you dont see many old desi's out there? Because they have kept their healthcare poor specifically to keep the old people out. No matter how much one tries to prove it, Desi's may compete with each other.. but the minute the UAE shiekh's sees the western man.. he throws us out.

The French are reaping the fruits of their own greedy nature.
They want to make up for the R&D of the Rafale and the actual "unit cost" of the jet.
The Shiekhs are way too smart for that, and the result is the EF guys being tempted.

Rafale is getting Raped by Typhoon everywhere it goes. I am more and more confident each day that we made the right choice.
obviously Typhoon is far better than Rafael. Typhoon comes almost the best aircrafts within the fourth generation.....:smokin:

Santro !
comment on the topic, your above listed theory breaks as long as I and others like me exist.
Neither can we complain as long as we are guilty of the same crime.
I have worked with AHQ, AWC and GHQ long enough.

Back on Topic:
I heard that some officers and advisers were pissed at Thales, and revenged by ruining the deal.

Even if there are kickbacks, at least they care for their country and nationals and keep it first and foremost unlike the leadership in Pakistan.

You cannot even compare Pakistani leadership with these people. Pakistani leadership cannot even reach the level of 5% of what the UAE leadership are with their nationals.
