LAHORE: Rejecting a recent statement of the two United Nations experts, the Punjab government, through a spokesman for the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), says Rs20 billion have been allocated for compensating affectees of the Orange Line train project besides additional funds for keeping the route away from heritage sites/buildings.

Two experts of the UN, in a statement to the media, had urged the government to halt work on the Orange Line train, saying the train was a threat to a large number of protected heritage sites and historical buildings, besides resulting in evictions.

The LDA spokesman claims the compensation amount for the affectees of the train project was two times more than the allocation for affectees of other projects.

He added the project was designed after conducting an in-depth study and survey on traffic.

The spokesman said the government was spending additional money of Rs44 million to keep the train track away from Shalamar and Chauburji by acquiring about 6 kanal private land.

“The government is passing the metro train underground at a 1.75km portion from Jain Mandir to an intersection nearby Lakshmi Chowk in order to save heritage sites, including the GPO,” the spokesman said.
