just in time for election in 2018? :p

Approx completion date is May 2017. Election in April 2018. They'll like expand the project to other cities during that time, as once you've trains and major tracks, adding few more km can take less than a year. This way, only lahore won't be voting for PML, others as well.

The billion $ question is who will pay this massive 1.6billion$ loan amount? Lahore? Or whole Pakistan?

And kt's going to be subsidized! Why does the gov't subsidizes what can actually net them good income? Dissolve PIA etc and focus on profit making, THEN venture into other markets. PIA has been making loss for 10 years, metro train will make loss too if subsidies are not stopped. It's better to have loaded train with profit paying riders than crowded with sunsidies.

1. where is the approval of this loan from the cabinet as per 18th Amendment?
2. China is not doing it for free. What are the terms and conditions of this project and loan? In how many years and at what profit rate Lahore has to return the debt?
3. will the debt be paid from only Lahore's share from NFC award or as usual the budget from other cities of punjab shall be consumed on Lahore?

One thing I have learned from the politics of PMLN that their media propaganda is better than all other parties!

plus .. this project was brain child of Pervaiz Ilahi basically who was the best administrator, Punjab ever saw but just because PMLN can only think about elections and nothing else, they preferred Jangla Bus over it and now again for the sake of vote bank they are going to start this project. Pervaiz Ilahi's project was on Build Operate and Deliver Basis with $10 Bn of investment while in this project nobody what are the terms and condition with China.

Wow underground..

Lahore really needs underground system. Start with smaller tracks but still go underground. When the need to expand arise, it's much much better. We had elevated metro trains here and now majority is underground in crowded areas. More tracks will also be made underground. It simply saves way much space and lahore is very congested. Only busses or trams should be on the road. Elevated makes sense for Quetta or even Peshawar, as smaller cities, small budget.

I hope Karachi one gets underground.

Lahore's Metro Train Project in 1991 by PML-N

LRMT8.jpg

In 1991 during Nawaz Sharif’s termas prime minister, the feasibility of a light rail transit system was determined by Japanese development organisation (JICA). It had proposed a 13 kilometre long system. The study was reviewed and updated as part of the World Bank funded “Lahore traffic and transport studies” in 1993.

The system’s cost was estimated at about US $400 million, but with better network coverage. In 1995 Japan proposed financing the original scheme with grants and loans of about US $495 million, but the project could not be implemented due to many reasons.

There have been plans to start for a mass transit project for the last twenty years. A transport master plan of Lahore prepared by JICA in 1991 recommended mass transit on the Ferozepur Road. The project was shelved after the issue of funding could not be solved. After that, the project was revived in 1997-98. The government was close to signing an agreement when the nuclear blasts were conducted and the government was eventually toppled.

whoever did the fraud has nothing to do with the project. I still maintain that SS should have carried out this project! and how can they say that Metro Bus costed Rs30 Bn? This is utter lie.. it is more than three times.. and buses are taken from Turkish Company on lease! Govt has to pay subsidy on fare and hence it is a permanent burden on the shoulders of govt. That's why the funds from South are being spent only in Lahore. While the PI Metro project was on BOD basis on which there was nothing to be spent by govt. All was FDI. They had to operate it to gain profit and after the stipulated time, they were supposed to deliver it to Govt of Punjab.

Bakwaas tareen...

If they had plan for Metro Train for the last freakin two decades then why to waste money on Jangla Bus at first place? and If somebody was carrying on their own proposed project, why to abandon it? PMLN is just propaganda party. Too much blah blah without any actual progress. They are adept at making headlines, that's it. Let's see the details about finances of this new orange line project then we will in a position to discuss this further.

Its only bcz some Arsshole offer thier "skin" against whole some of money enough for his two three generations....instead of becoming "Wada Muaff Gawah" for the state.....A sad reality.

Sindh will not have anything as long as PPP is in power.....I mean just look at Karachi fablous city but neglected sadly by that province

Totally agree. On my recent trip to Karachi I was disappointed how this city has been totally orphaned. Its neglected and the two parties, PPP and MQM, running it are actually ruining it by doing petty politics.
