AHMEDABAD: Rahul Gandhi sees shades of Mao Zedong in Narendra Modi. On a whistle-stop tour of Gujarat on Friday that took him to three cities, he faced a barrage of questions on the chief minister's development work.
Finally in Ahmedabad, when yet another student had the same poser for him, he apparently shot back, ''Mao also developed China but he caused destruction to the country, too.''
Fresh from his Bihar drubbing, Rahul looked undeterred and drew huge crowds wherever he went in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot. College students packed venues and heard him speak. Like always, the press was kept away from these sessions. Nidhi, an Ahmedabad student, recalled how a young girl got into an argument with Rahul challenging him to name Congress leaders who could measure up to Modi on development work. Rahul apparently had the names ready Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, Jairam Ramesh and A K Antony.
On Modi, the young Congress leader's take reportedly was he wouldn't deny the CM his share of credit for developing the state but he had ''caused some issues'' for the country, too. The girl pressed on saying she assumed Rahul was referring to the Gujarat riots. Both Muslims and Hindus had died in that violence, she insisted. The Congress leader refused to engage further and walked out saying he was getting late.
