Refuting news reports of an arrest in the Bodh Gaya multiple blasts case, the Gaya police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) denied any such development.

According to earlier news reports, a Hindu priest, Arup Brahmachari, was arrested in connection with the July 7 serial blasts at the Mahabodhi temple in Gaya.

When asked for confirmation, an NIA source told The Hindu, “No such person is being questioned in NIA case.”

Gaya senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vinay Kumar told The Hindu, that Brahmachari was detained for sending offensive emails to the district administration.

“He claims to be a priest. He has been sending abusive mails to the district magistrate and other administration officials regarding corruption in the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) for nearly two to three years. We were looking for him. Some are saying he is mentally unsound. There is no clue or evidence linking him to the blast,” Mr. Kumar said.

The Gaya police, he said, were lodging an FIR against Brahmachari under section 66 (hacking with computer system) of the Information Technology Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for using foul language. “He will be produced in court. It is up to the court whether to grant him bail.”

Asked if the NIA would be questioning him in connection with the blast case, the SSP said it was for the agency to decide.
