New Delhi: Helped by the 4.5 per cent minority subquota, nearly 400 Muslim aspirants have cracked the IIT-JEE this year — the largest number of Muslim boys and girls ever to have scored at what is among the world’s most competitive entrance examinations.

A total 325 aspirants belonging to economically and socially backward sections of minority communities have been shortlisted for admission to the 15 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) under the subquota. The IIT Joint Admission Board is yet to analyse the profile of the qualifying students, but most of these 325 are thought to be Muslim.

These aspirants are almost assured of admission, since as many as 443 seats are kept aside for non-creamy layer OBC minority community students under the 4.5 per cent quota. Over 180 Muslim candidates have been shortlisted in the general category as well.

A tentative count shows that a total of 391 Muslim candidates have been shortlisted for counselling. The highest rank made by a Muslim candidate is said to be 159th. A total 24,112 candidates among the nearly 5.6 lakh who sat for IIT-JEE 2012 have been shortlisted.

“Of the total 9,647 seats in the 15 IITs, ISM Dhanbad and IT-BHU, 443 are earmarked for minorities under the 4.5 per cent quota. So far, 325 people from the minority communities have been shortlisted for these seats. These students from the non-creamy layer have to submit a certificate/undertaking establishing their credentials by June 1. Counseling for them will start around June 10,” Prof G B Reddy, chairman of IIT-JEE 2012, said.

Of the 325 shortlisted minority candidates, 303 are boys and 22 girls. The 118 unfilled seats under the quota will be passed on to non-minority OBC candidates.

The Centre had announced a 4.5 per cent subquota within the 27 per cent OBC quota in government jobs and admissions to central educational institutions just before the UP assembly elections. The human resource development ministry asked all institutions to implement the subquota from January 2012. The IITs are the first to implement the government’s decision.

The government has been encouraging the setting up of centres to coach students from minority communities for competitive examinations. Private centres focused on minority students, such as Rahmani 30 in Bihar, have come up over the last few years.

Yazeed Bashamakh: Son of a TV mechanic will enter IIT

By Mumtaz Alam Falahi, TwoCircles.net,

New Delhi: Poverty creates obstacles but cannot stop you from going ahead if you have will, determination and ability. The results of IIT-JEE 2012 have once again proved it. Sons of poor fathers have also cracked the entrance test for admission to IITs. Among the successful Muslim candidates this year are sons of a TV mechanic and sofa maker.

Yazeed Bashamakh
Yazeed Bashamakh is the son of TV mechanic Abdulla Salam Bashamakh of Aurangabad in Maharashtra. Though he studied till 12th Class and would earn hardly enough for a family of six, Abdulla inspired and guided his son Yazeed to go ahead.

“He would say many people study in schools and colleges, but you have to study to do something different, some high,” recalls Yazeed while talking to TCN from Aurangabad.

The son has not disappointed the father. While the results of 12th Class exam are yet to come, Yazeed has cracked IIT-JEE. Yazeed, who comes in General Category, has got All India Rank of 1437, a good rank given the number of successful candidates and the number of seats in IITs.

More than 5.6 lakh students had appeared for IIT-JEE held on 8th April 2012. The results declared on 18th May 2012 saw 24,112 students as successful. Of them, 19,426 have been shortlisted for counseling for admission to 9,647 seats in 15 IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and other technical institutes of high repute in the country.

Journey of Education
Yazeed Bashamakh studied till 10th Class in Aurangabad. He passed 10th Class exam from Iqra Urdu Boys High School with flying colors. He got 93.45% marks. Headmaster of Iqra School guided Yazeed all through. He also told him about Rahmani-30 coaching centre in Patna. He cleared the entrance test of Rahmani-30 and shifted to Patna. He did 11th and 12th in Patna with the support of Rahmani-30 and all along was prepared for the IIT-JEE 2012.

A remarkable part of his journey of education is that till 10th Class he had studied in Urdu medium. He improved his English language in Patna and did intermediate through English medium. He also appeared in IIT-JEE 2012 as English medium student.

In IIT-JEE Yazeed has got 246 marks, that is 60.29% of the total marks 408.

Family
Abdulla Salam Bashamakh heads the family of six. Besides wife, he has three sons and one daughter. Eldest son Khaled Bashamakh did B.Com. and now is an earning hand for family. Zaid Bashamakh could study till 10th Class. He is also working. Yazeed is youngest among sons. Daughter Humera Bashamakh is studying in school.

Origin
Yazeed Bashamakh’s origin is in Yemen. “My great grandfather was a native of Yemen. He moved to India and settled in Aurangabad. Bashamakh is a qabila (clan) in Yemen. Members of this group are still found in Yemen," he said.

Giving more information about the migration of his family, Yazaeed's father Abdulla Salam Bashamakh told TCN: "My grandfather Ahmad Bashamakh had come to marathwada region in Nizam's time. My grandfather carried two of his three sons to India. My father Salam Bashamakh remained here but my uncle went back to yemen at the time of Partition of India in 1947."

Md. Nadeem Akhtar
This is another boy of Rahmani-30 who has cleared IIT-JEE with good ranks. While he got All India Rank of 2376, among all OBC candidates at national level he stands at 294 and among Minority OBC he has got 16th rank.

Akhtar also comes from a poor background. His father, a sofa maker, is just 10th pass. Akhtar belongs to Dehri On Sone in Rohtas district of Bihar.

Like I always say:

You should see whether the negativities about India are increasing or decreasing.

..and I tell you that they sure are decreasing. :)

. . .
I think the title is misleading. 400 Muslim candidates was selected under the 4.5% quota minority quota. There may be more amongthe 24,112 shortlisted.

. . .
To be honest, I am against quota. Because of quotas, people that should not be in IITs are in IITs, and people who qualified are suffering.

With news articles like this, every Muslim student will be looked at with suspicion and derision.

Did he/she earn it, or are they simply here because of quota?

Indian secularism just took a punch in the stomach.

.
Good for them:tup:

And this 4.5% quota is within the 27% OBC quota anyways, so no extra disadvantage for general candidates.

Now the next step should be giving reservation on the basis of poverty, instead of castes/religion. But with vote bank politics, one can only wish. :disagree:

Yes, it is true. Companies that come to IIT campuses for recruitment are reluctant to hire quota candidates. In the long run, this will harm Muslim candidates

here comes the kick boxer on secularism..

In IIT, within in months, the classmates & trachers will come to know who came thru quota or not..

BY THEIR IQ LEVELS, PERFORMANCE...nothing else.

The whole quota system should be scarped. Instead government should provide better education facilities to the underprivileged, so that they are on equal footing while competing. Quota system is simply wrong and anti competitive
