My Question? Future equipment and tools of Pakistan Navy till 2025....
the 6 Type-21s are already due for retirement 2015-16. there is an urgent need to replace these frigates with new or refurbished surface vessels. navy's plan to induct up to 6 Perry class FFGs has run into choppy waters as a single Perry FFG has been inducted so far.
there is news that a new improved version of the Chinese built F-22P to be designated as F-23P is under consideration but no official confirmation has materialized to replace Type-21s with the F-23P. the navy seems to still harbor expectations that improving relations with the US will still result in the release of at least another 3 Perrys which will be upgraded with Pakistani money.
meanwhile the 4 F-22Ps inducted during the last 5 years are expected to remain operational until 2030.
the navys budgeted strength for frigates is up to 12 surface ships.
the navys cutting edge which is its submarine force is down to 5 operational boats, 3 Agosta 90s and 2 Agosta 70s. the latter are also due for retirement in 2015-16. after much delay the government has finally approved the purchase of 8 Chinese built Type 41 Song class (designated as S20) with AIP to be delivered in the next 5 years. at least 2 boats will be built locally at Karachi by KSEW. the navys previous plans to purchase german U214 and French Marlins ran into financial difficulties. now however the Chinese EXIM bank is providing soft loans for the purchase of Chinese submarines.
the navys French built Munsif class minesweepers would also need to be replaced in the near future around 2020-22.
for coastal defence the navys has invested in the purchase of 8 Azmat class FACs of 550 tons each to replace a composite of FACs in navy inventory.
navy has also purchased from Turkey two different types of MRPT boats to complement the Azmat class FACs.
for replenishment of its major surface and subsurface fleets, the navy has 2 tankers operational and a 3rd is being built at Karachi by KSEW of a Turkish design.
the navy is also upgrading the assets deployed by the MSA in the form of 8 cutters from the US and a further 6 from china for patrolling the dockyards, the monitoring of the creeks bordering with india and the EEZ.
the navys aviation assets are now being shifted along the makran coast after the militant attacks on PNS Mehran which resulted in the loss of 2 P3Cs. a total of 7 P3Cs are still operational in the ASW role. 6 shore based Seaking MK45s are also used for the ASW & minor . 6 Z9ec ASW helos purchased along with the F-22Ps complement the navys ASW capabilities.
for the MSA role the navy is in the process of purchasing ATR42 in the MSA and Transport role. a Turkish MSA package has been selected to fit the aircraft. 2 aircraft have been delivered so far. these will replace the existing fleet of Fokker F-27s in service with the navy in various roles.
for maritime interdiction role the navy will depend on the support of the PAFs land based maritime strike aircraft currently the French built Mirages capable of firing the Exocet AM39 ashm and in the near future the JF17 Thunder capable of firing the much improved C802A ashm.
it must be understood the navy is not a blue water navy as its main mission is to defend the countrys sea lanes in times of conflict.
