This is minority appeasement at a retrograde level, this is like treating Muslims as Non Indians, such laws does more disservice for the community than any good. It prevents minorities from getting into the mainstream and holds them in a reserved space. All separate laws should be abolished and a uniform code of conduct should be established for all Indians.

1) What the heck is 'Mohammedan Law' ? Islamic Jurisprudence is hardly monolithic.

2) Legislating a 'Mohammedan Law', isn't that 'religion manifesting itself in a political capacity' ? How can the 'Secularism' intrinsic to the Indian Constitution condone something like that ?

3) Even having 'puberty' as a cut-off date for marriage isn't ubiquitously accepted in the Muslim World with many Muslim majority countries having '18 or 21' as the allowable date for marriage for both men and women ! So one might do well to ask whether the Government should put its foot down or not and say - No...you're too young !

Girl cannot merry anybody without the consent of his guardian. Age has nothing to do with that. There is something very seriously wrong with Indian Interpretation of this law.

Yaar but even still how do you guys reconcile 'religious freedom' with 'absurdity or even something heinous in the guise of religion' ? When does the time come when the State has the right to say 'Oye...wait a minute, are you seriously implying that a Muslim girl somehow matures (physically or mentally) more quickly than the rest of them and that there should be a different allowable marital date for Muslims and Non-Muslims ?' ! Isn't doing so a tacit approval of the 'Shariah' because the Shariah in essence is 'Islamic Law' one aspect of which deals with one's marital life and consequently the 'Minimum age for Marriage' ! Dammn...thats a nasty conundrum to be in !

There has to be a limit ofcourse, BUT, making the age for sexual consent to 18 yrs is ridiculous......
Considering a 18 yr. old woman as a child is a bit too much.....It highlights our age old control freak mentality......

once the great poet Rabindranath Tagore said "by the time a woman reaches 20, she is old"........

If raising the sexual consent age would reduce crime......... then why stop at 18......increase the age further to 20...25....30..... hoping they would decrease 'crime against women' more and more........may be, one day we'll end up with '30 yr. old girls'.........

Most countries have logically fixed the legal age for sexual consent between 14-16 yrs.......and a 15 yr. old girl is matured enough to understand what she is doing........

These bastards just recently raised the age of consent for sex from 16 to 18 ( In most countries it is 15 or 16) . so now Muslims girls can get married at 15 but non-muslims can't even have sex before 18 . These people are enemies of India as they know this kind of stuff leads to resentment .
