What's new

More Talwar Class Frigates for Indian Navy

If the price is right, then we should buy them

We are already building 7 Frigates and 5 Destroyers under make in India,

It will take 10 years for all of them to enter service
Currently we have 10 Destroyers and 15 Frigates, that's 25 Principle Surface combatants not counting the 3500 Ton Kamorta class heavy corvettes

Our fleet is expected to fall down to 20 or even 19 Principle Surface Combatants by year 2022, when first of P15B and P17A start joining service
That's because Godavari class and Rajput class will start Retiring in year 2016, and their replacements are 7-10 years away

Hence we should acquire additional Talwar class frigates,
They will allow us to retire the Godavari class without fear of losing edge
I am for additional talwars, but tell be how frigates will replace destroyers?

If you read my post again
Then u will see that I clearly mentioned that Talwar class will allow us to retire Godavari class without any fear of loosing Combat edge

The Rajput class's replacement is the P15B
We will have to deal with the fact that 2-3 Rajput class warships will retire before the first P15B enters service

The Rajput class is between 27-35 years old

Theoretically speaking, INS Rajput should have been retired this year, after completing its expected service life of 35 years
But it has not been retired because
First the ship received an MLU in year 2004-05,
Secondly its still more capable than any ship in service with Pakistan Navy
Thirdly the Navy is waiting for INS Chennai to enter service before it starts Retiring the Rajput class.

Rajput class are not going anywhere for at least 5 more years. They have been sufficiently upgraded. Received BrahMos and new electronics. They will continue to serve the eastern command for some time now.

So in the end Indian navy end up getting..
3 Kolkata class(AESA+ Barak-8+ Brahmos).
4 Visakhapatnam class( AESA+ Barak-8ER+ Brahmos).
7 P-17A. (AESA+ Barak-8ER+ Brahmos).

9 Talwar class ( Brahmos)
3 Shivalik class( Brahmos/Klub)
3 Delhi class ( Brahmos is planned in MLU).

That's a total of 14 aegis comparable stealth warships along othe 15 other very potent Brahmos equipped warships including 12 stealth warships.
PS: I am talking only about destroyers and frigates.

new Talwar class frigates from Russia through Reliance Defense, which was earlier planned for Russian Navy, those three ships are almost completed without having the engine/power plant, due to the Ukrainian issue, they denied to supply the Zorya gas turbine engines to Russia, So Russia has no plans either scrap the Ships or transfer to Friendly country's who maintain peace with both Russia and Ukraine, Earlier Russia openly offered the Ships to India, however

Can someone tell me why the Ambanis are making money on this?

Well they are smart. They sensed the role private players are gonna play and thus bought Pipavav. Submarines, frigates, LPDs many such deals are coming to private players and L&T and Pipavav are 2 key players along with others.

Lollz. They weren't 'smart'. They got inside info and firmed up future tenders by bribing the def min. Then arm twisted the likes of Pipavav to sell out to them. Why would Pipavav want to sell to the Ambanis when a huge wave of contracts is underway?

Also DCNS has already patched up with Pipavav back in 2012-13 for LPD tender. If Mistral is selected then expect Pipavav to build it. They have got some hugh dry docks too though( 650 m*65 m)

You might need Ambani to deal with the Russians. No need to worry as long as MP is RM. Not even the Ambais have enough money to corrupt him. Might work out well for us actually. I think having Ambanis in defence production is a good thing, there are few who are better than them in getting access to what they want..... Technology...people....nothing off limits. Indian might benefit much, a RM who cannot be bought & the Ambanis who can pretty much buy almost anything else....:enjoy:

Well Russia chooses them not India as per requirement that they have to choose a private player.( like DCNS chose pipavav in 2012 for LPD deal). For rest I will only say that its business at best. We cant stop anyone to do buy or sell some company

Exactly my thought. Buying this ship is a political risk, it can piss of the Ukranians.

Its better the whole thing is outsourced to people who have the capability to do business in heavy political environment and have money to spare. Ambani's are the first name that come to mind. If anyone can get the engine from Ukrain its them.

Not to mention it gives them a heads up in kick starting their defence industry vertical and introduce more professionalism in the Industry.

This deal was made for them.
