Kayani last obstacle to Kashmir deal : US cable

Before the usual bickering settles in.. and this thread has to be closed eventually..
Even if Kashmir is resolved.. amicably..
There are other minor disputes.. especially regarding water..

Water ?? Minor Dispute ??

If it had not been for the headwaters that originate or flow through Kashmir this issue would have been another Junagadh. Long lost in the trashbin of history.

Only solution - Make LoC as IB and make the borders closely regulated for a decade so that the mistrust on both sides ceases to exist and then if situations permit make it a porous yet legally regulated border. NOT an open border because then with it comes illegal migration.

Solution is plebiscite let a final fair and free and internationally monitored plebiscite take place in all of Kashmir.

Decide it once and for all.

But still it is under civilian control, our political leaders can control it.

That isnt very reassuring.. here it is suggested that we resize.. and both armies be in civillian control.. but you get to keep your big guns and we dont?

Plebiscite is the solution for only those who are still in dreams as far as Kashmir is concerned. i don't know abt pakistan but india won't conduct any plebiscite in kashmir. because indian stand on kashmir is that J&K is an integral part of india. hence there is no need of any plebiscite.

But IA is already under civilian control .

What further is needed ? that the COAS be a IAS officer ? :-/

And please elaborate on the resizing part. If is was meant to downsize the Army remember we have honeymoon dates with China too.

I am quite happy to hear this, because this will keep the Pakistan defence budget keep on increasing, sacrifising jobs and industrys in Pakistan, so nations like India and Bangladesh can take advantage of Pakistan.

Will all the trouble of terrorist and kashmir in Pakistan, Bangladesh have managed to take control of the textile industry in South Asia, with help of Pakistan Army caring for they own interest.

Hope it continues, as one year, with India 9% economic growth, Pakistan will have no choice but to surrender, if they continue they poor economic pattern.

We know the IA is under civilian control.. although conflicting sentiments.. by the Chief and the PM seem to belie that fact..
As for the honeymoon with China.. how much do you need there??
its a mountainous region..
still.. keep the troops.. just shift the bases.. cant that be done??

General Kayani is a great person , Kashmir is a part of Pakistan and we dont trust these leaks they are meant for making people against their Army General,
All of these leaks are done only for the benefit of USA only....
Even if Zardari sign any thing about kashmir issue will remains there. only people of Kashmir can solve it and the only solution acceptable by Kashmir people will take the issue to be resolved.

Pakistan army is there to defend Pakistan and thats what USA, India dont like and want Pakistani people get against this great army.

foolish thinking by indian people on this forum...

Actually there is no sense in shifting the bases because only J&K borders with Aksai Chin where the Chinese have a sizable presence and the terrain (flat plateau) allows troop mobilising. Uttaranchal and Himachal are both mountainous on either part and there is no sense in shifting the base to a place where the terrain doesn't allow it. Remember we claim Aksai Chin also which was occupied by China post 1962 ?

BTW Uttaranchal also has a border with Nepal and it wont be a good signal moving the bases there.

BTW as for the conflicting remarks from the COAS, well he is also a human and he has his opinions. While the PM is foremost concerned with the political aspect the COAS is concerned with the military thing and there is bound to be discord. But the main point is whether the COAS (Indian) will use the power at this disposal to overrule the civilian authority, which has not happened till date and will not happen in the future.

P0K leaders justify India’s objection to Chinese projects
Wednesday, October 14, 2009 6:14:07 PM

New Delhi, Oct.14 (ANI): Nationalist leaders of Gilgit Baltistan have asked India to stop lip service and take stronger action to halt Chinese projects in Kashmir.

Chief of Gilgit Baltistan National Movement Manzoor Parwana Told ANI over phone: “If India is really serious then it should react more strongly and it should not just resort to lip service or statements.”

Parwana further said “India should try and halt the Chinese projects in our region.

Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesman said in a statement that China should cease all its activities in Kashmir.

The MEA spokesperson was reacting to Xinuha report which quoted Chinese President as stating that China will continue to engage in projects with Pakistan inside Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

The MEA in a strongly worded statement further said: “India believes that Pakistan has been in illegal occupation of parts of the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir since 1947. The Chinese side is fully aware of India’s position and our concerns about Chinese activities in Kashmir”.

The MEA’s response is seen as a quid pro quo as it came a day after China expressed disappointment over Indian Prime Minister visit to Arunachal Pradesh ahead of Tuesday’s elections.

Taking objection to Chinese projects in Gilgit Baltistan, the chief of the Gilgit Baltistan National Alliance WajahatHassan Khan told ANI over phone: “China has already occupied a part of Gilgit Baltistan , a little part of Hunza is under its control and Aksai Chin is also occupied.”

Since Gilgit Baltistan is a disputed area, China has no business to build projects here, Khan added.

The nationalist leaders further told ANI that there is a perception in the region that India is party to the dispute and it has every right to object to China building projects there.

India is objecting to various Chinese funded projects in namely Neelum Jhelum project, Diamer Bhasha Dam , Extension of Karakoram Highway, Sost Dry Port and Bunji Dam to name a few

What following these so called nationalist leaders have in AJK or GB?? Nothing not even 1%. I would suggests to all the indian members here to please accept the reality. I can assure you guys that people in AJK or GB will never accept India even if they have some negative feeling about Pakistani governments.
You People will be surprized to know that after Punjabis and Pushtons and Pakistan Army's 3rd main source of recuitment is AJK and GB, I think there are more AJK n GB people in Army then Balochis or Sindhis. And people willingly and happily join army and Paramillitary. now if they don't want to be with pakistan then why they join Army.??

Move on from 1947-48, decades have gone

Off course, there is China too.

Also you can't compare 1 to 1. Look at the size/economy difference.
