Kayani last obstacle to Kashmir deal : US cable

True. Kayani is a hardliner. Had he agreed to the Manmohan-Musharraf deal, Kashmir would have been solved long time back. The truth is that Kayani has gone back to the old line of PA.

As long as PA has this hawkish, zero-compromise attitude, Kashmir will not be solved. Period.

Why are all of you people so zombified by this "Kashmir issue"? There is no freaking issue on this state. It is just hit by militancy which can be solved internally if we have a reasonable nation loving government. Are you one of those AMAN KI Asha people?

Actually there is no sense in shifting the bases because only J&K borders with Aksai Chin where the Chinese have a sizable presence and the terrain (flat plateau) allows troop mobilising. Uttaranchal and Himachal are both mountainous on either part and there is no sense in shifting the base to a place where the terrain doesn't allow it. Remember we claim Aksai Chin also which was occupied by China post 1962 ?

BTW Uttaranchal also has a border with Nepal and it wont be a good signal moving the bases there.

BTW as for the conflicting remarks from the COAS, well he is also a human and he has his opinions. While the PM is foremost concerned with the political aspect the COAS is concerned with the military thing and there is bound to be discord. But the main point is whether the COAS (Indian) will use the power at this disposal to overrule the civilian authority, which has not happened till date and will not happen in the future.

I wonder if your opinion was to have been this soft had the gentlemen in question been Pakistani..
But.. considering even the Americans have their .. conflicting statements.. (but generally toe the line...rather than a 180 reversal)... ill let this go.

Actually if a COAS exiles an Indian Prime Minister and 'rules' it for 8 years or a PM was executed on the covert orders of the COAS then I would not have been this soft. Hope you understand the difference.

Thank God for Kayani.

As for Gaddari, well, no surprise there...

In my belief Dr. Manmohan singh is the most reasonable Prime minister, pakistan would ever get to resolve bilateral issues.

Post 26/11, at sharm-el-sheikh he was willing to go the extra mile by addressing pakistani concerns like baluchistan, etc. The Indian media started saying it was a "sell out" at sharm-el-sheikh, the Pakistani media was jubilant . People will know what happened post 9/11, The United States of America did go the extra mile by issuing "threats" to sovereign nation state.

His statement "For peace, will meet Pakistani leaders 'more than half way" is not an empty rhetoric.

If the issue is not resolved under the leadership of MMS, the "Kashmir" issue will go on and on. There is no end in sight. The ultimate losers will be people of both the countries. For pakistan, its the routine internal violence and for India, its the occasional violence aided and abetted by external elements.

The Hindu hardliners from Saffron opposed Manmohan Singh-Musharraf deal on Kashmir and it was those hindu militants who even changed and blocked joint statement at the last hour

Jana with Hindu-phobia!!! Where did you got such hatred toward other religion? How can terrorists change or block joint statement? Another conspiracy.

Hindu hardliners opposed the deal and changed and blocked a joint statement at the eleventh hour ? By the way where is this "Saffron" place which you always refer to ?

You truly should consider writing a fictitious novel on some Hindu group's plans to take over the world Jana. I'm certain that it will become a best seller with your vivid imagination :D

Jana also has conspiracies but that revolves around some 'Saffron' , 'Hindu' groups!!!! Different people different conspiracies. But the conspiracies remains. :D Everything in the world led her to 'Saffron' 'Hindu' groups, as you can even see on the signature!!!!

you are missing those hindu extremist internal issues in india......

Nowhere in the article is Hindu objections to the deal mentioned. In fact certain people have this misconception that India is controlled by Hindus or Hindu hardliners and that Indians vote as religious blocs :D If there was any merit to such a stupid suggestion then parties like the RSS or VHP or even BJP would be in power for eternity. Jana should really study Indian voting patterns, learn about Indian democracy and governance, perhaps even do a crush course in Hinduism before shooting off statements without any substance here.

The problem is, you don't understand a few things. There are some Kashmiris in Azad Kashmir who want to be part of Pakistan, & other who want an independent Kashmir state. No one in Azad Kashmir hates Pakistan, and everyone is entitled to their opinion without facing any consequences. Azad Kashmir already has autonomous status, it is not governed by Pakistan but by Kashmiri authorities, it's just inside Pakistan but governed independent of it. This is not the situation in Jammu & Kashmir. Eventually, Pakistan will be fine with Azad Kashmir becoming an independent nation if J&K also becomes an independent nation, & is a part of Azad Kashmir, I'm positive about that. I don't understand what all the fuss is about from the Indians. People in Azad Kashmir call it Azad Kashmir, not Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. And J&K is really Indian Occupied/'Maqbooza' Kashmir.

Kayani is from the 1971 generation of army officials that have spent their whole career yearning for revenge. In the process they have turned Pakistan into the current situation.

This generation of officers needs to pass and a new generation needs to emerge for any possibility of peace between the two countries.

From what I see, it's India that's desperate for a resolution in Kashmir, whereas Pakistan is fine with the situation as it is. There is a reason why India needs 800,000 troops in Indian Occupied Kashmir whereas Pakistan doesn't need any in Azad Kashmir.
