Hi,

Good man---you learning about aesa---good for you. People think that making of an aesa radar is easy----having no clue about the difficulties.

Sir, of course it's not easy, nothing about aircraft design and manufacturing can be deemed easy but it's not impossible either and when a solution is designed it would be done by professionals who know real world problems pertaining to AESA and have prior experience of it (myriad of Chinese implementations). So while not underestimating the huge challenges in terms of complexity of technology, cooling and power needs, we amateurs and enthusiasts can hypothesise and enjoy our discussions on the forum and learn a thing or two from professionals like the one who posted above you.

i hope they can just keep them rolling for now. The upgrades will come as time goes, AESA, more hard points, FLIR, each of these will multiply the capability of JF-17 and its utility with PAF in years to come. However the need of hour is that Gov. do keep providing PAC with enough funds to keep the JF-17 Blk-II planes rolling. We cannot afford any stoppage or delays in the production as many planes in our existing fleet need replacement.

Whats going on?
Either 'phase' or 'depot' maintenance. But from the pix, am guessing phase maintenance.

Unscheduled maintenance is always because of things that malfunction from flying. An attitude displacement indicator (ADI) got its 'ball' stuck, then the ADI is replaced on landing is an example.

Phase maintenance is based upon time, or flying hours passed. The aircraft is turned over to a specific unit trained to perform detailed inspection and R/R of anything that shows certain signs of structural stresses, out of tolerance wear, corrosion, etc.

Depot level maintenance is where the aircraft is returned to either the manufacturer or a third party maintenance outfit certified by the manufacturer to literally open and expose the aircraft down to the bare frame. Components are removed and tested, no matter what condition or age, and replace if necessary. Paint is removed and re-applied, inside and out.

From the pix, fuel is removed for safety reasons, but hydraulic fluids are kept. The jet is on jacks, main gears are up but nose gear is down, indicating gear maintenance part of the phase inspection period. Not sure why the training missile is attached, unless it is used for troubleshooting purposes. All flight control surfaces are leveled, but no external hydraulics hoses are visible, so the flight control surfaces are rigged. Absent hydraulics pressure, flight control surfaces usually droops from their weight. Canopy is removed, meaning the Egress shop has their hands on the jet. Those white stripes topside are tapes holding panels in place, so most likely those panels are fuel tanks access. Fuel tanks comes in all shapes and sizes and they usually wraps around the engines. Hard to tell if the jet is at the beginning or near the end of phase but since there seems to be an engine cradle, that could mean the jet is being prepped to have its engine removed and that mean the jet is at the front half of phase.

Thanks for explaining all that.
However; the tag for the picture says "JF-17's final assembly line at Chengdu".

Ah... MK sb, but we will get it regardless of the difficulties.

One day you would (grudgingly) admit that JF-17 has been a game changer for Pakistan and that it was a good decision.

I think everyone agrees JF-17 is a much needed asset but it will take time to be matured and reach to the point to compete with western technologies for PAF it is a boost as it is replacing 3 types and more than capable but again mastering even this technology/aircraft would take time for many pilots to come don't you agree but than you can't neglect the reality you would need another generation of aircraft to fight a powerful opposition on the other side of the border.

Tough to tell. A guess is the best I can do based upon what was given. The large 'JF-17' on the vertical stab would not be on a normal squadron jet, to be sure. But I was going for the environment, the shelves on the wall, the yellow lines on the floor, drip pans, etc. and that hangar looks very much like a typical phase maintenance hangar instead of a factory assembly line.

If you look closely, the MLG bays are also open, indicating that the MLG struts and wheels have been taken off...

Its not so important really.
The information that you provided is precise and correct anyway; more so in the context that you were explaining to us.

@nomi007, please note that this newspaper story is quoting World Tribune. GEO and Jang have done the same. So, for now it boils down to ONE person's view; and that one person is the local reporter of World Tribune, that is, if they have any.

I would sit tight for now and wait for something substantial or official. Its no use quoting multiple sources that can be traced to just one report.
