JF-17 Block III's proposed AESA Radar KLJ-7A

Significant news:

According to Henri K., the new version of the KLJ-7A radar has three arrays (one front, two facing the sides), thereby allowing the JF-17 to scan to the sides & additionally to the back.

More information is expected to be revealed in the next couple of days as the airshow in Zhuhai officially opens. Of course, power consumption would likely be increased but the JF-17 is also slated for newer & more capable powerplants in the near future.

That is the most significant part of the news---the side mounted arrays---.
 
Indeed; over all configuration and making such a decision will change overall scope impacting present timelines. This replacement if at all required can be considered as a parallel development as a POC.

does this mean the blk-3 would be powered by the WS-13 engine that would provide the needed power this AESA radar? Also, what does it mean when he says "thereby allowing the JF-17 to scan to the sides & additionally to the back"? Is there going to be a scanner in the back as well? :close_tema:
WS-13 and RD-93MA are expected to be available post march 2019 so its one of the delays in Blk-3. It will be either one of these but both power plants are similar with Chinese and Russians working together.

WS-13 and RD-93MA are expected to be available post march 2019 so its one of the delays in Blk-3. It will be either one of these but both power plants are similar with Chinese and Russians working together.
Well then how are they able to test the AESA radar, does the current engine produce enough power?

Looking at this the nose on the JF-17 Block-3 will need a redesign different from what we've seen on the JF-17 B which was a enlargement.

Or one possibility is, J-31 is also expected to use the KLJ-7A and the version intended for J-31 has different antenna arrangement like the one just revealed, while version for JF-17 is similar to the previous KLJ-7A pictures we saw.

The redesigned nose is pretty clear in this pic, behind the AESA antenna.

We have a confirmation that the blk 3 will feature J-10B like tilted nose section, and a Raven like antenna position. Interestingly, the nose does look to be in diamond shape, suggesting that perhaps, the blk 3 does have some RCS reduction features.

Yes you are right, that would be needed to fit the type of radar design in the picture, earlier news was JF-17B enlarged nose was the blk-3 design. New development, here. :tup:
 
I dont think Rafale or any modern AESA equipped fighter features side arrays as of now. The F22 seems to have them, as upgrade though..

This is indeed groundbreaking development for the jf-17 and PAF. Amazing times ahead, not for the opposition though.
