Hi,

What posters are missing here is that the MIG21 is a 60's aircraft like the Mirage 3 when mach 2 ++ was the speed to be.

None of the aircraft--the Mig21 or the F16---fully loaded can do mach2.

Then flying at mach 2 is a very bad speed when your chasing missile is doing mach3---.

That means---higher your speed of flight---the lesser capability you will have to turn and evade a missile coming from behind---which is---at mach2---you can only fly straight as an arrow---.

That is right ; once a missile has locked on to you speed is irrelevant
Chaffs and flares might help in case of IR guidance AAM

And Towed decoys for Radar Guided ones

But speed is a good thing if you other limitations like Mig 21 Bison

In Large force engagements
Speed and Acceleration are its strengths when it is used
for Dash and Slash action

Mach 2 and plus speeds are useful for long range interceptors not short range interception and dogfighting. Their main job is to reach fast to target at longer ranges before threat has any chance to get near their targets. I think one of the first for this purpose was F-106, was a delta like mirages and was armed with a single nuclear tipped AAM for intercepting soviet strategic bombers. Mig-31s (and Mig-25 before it) are also geared for this purpose, to do long range interception and cover vast air spaces of previous soviet union and present Russia.

Before medium range and a bit longer ranged and more accurate short ranged missiles, arriving in a merge at speeds near 2.0 may still not result in problems for you as you can quickly get away before the opponent has time to respond. In present time doing such will be absolutely dumb, in such a case you cannot use air brakes, and except a very few aircrafts, most are limited to 5G at such speeds and may be lower for older frames. Your turns will be measly.. and if you ever end up in such a situation your best shot is to overshoot quickly over opponents and put as much distance between you and opponents before they can turn. And hopefully distance is more than their launch parameters for a fire and forget shot and force a pursuit and run away as fast as you can..

But if you are a short ranged interceptor than you have already failed your mission.. IAF pilots can not be as dumb as these hindian trolls on this forum..

More Mach can be of an advantage, to catch up an intruder fast.

Its been months since I am hearing about Mach 2. You're right speed doesn't matter even Rafale speed is nearby JF-17.

Did you saw ACM Aman interview with PTV?? He said PAF is dealing with a few countries for 5th gen jet and he also said that we are trying to negotiate for those 8 BLOCKED F-16. Any update on it?

Acm did not say those 8 he made a general statement so who know if it's 8 from US or 16 from Jordan or somewhere else anyway pak would need oem/USA approvals

Indian MIGs fly at Mach 2 and crash at Mach 3

Mig 21 Bison has Speed of Mach 2 and very good acceleration
It also has limited Range and limited LOITER time

SO for a plane with limited Range and limited Loiter time
Mach 2 Speed is a good thing

It can enter a Combat area ; Fire its AAMs and just scoot away

Modern fighters are moving towards a sustained supersonic speed through supercruise as opposed to short bursts of Mach 2 speeds seen in second/third gen aircraft.

The most successful Mach 2+ aircraft have been surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft. The ability to quickly cover large distances at 70000 ft was invaluable in the past. Today, with systems like S-400 things have changed.

That said, armed with precision air to ground weapons, the ability to perform a Mach 2+ pass in low level flight to drop ammo and scramble out of the hot zone would be valuable. Taking things a bit higher in the air, the number of kilotons/megatons of nuclear payload that can be SAFELY dropped by a plane is bounded above by the max speed. Certainly, a short Mach 2+ burst immediately after releasing a bad boy would be highly appreciated.

Yes, you can't outrun a Mach 3.0 missile at Mach 2, but the missile doesn't have long legs. At a certain distance, Mach 2.0 would increase survivability because the missile would fizzle out.

Yes, you can't make sharp turns at Mach 2, but even a 5 degree turn would take you very far in a very short time. If someone is crazy enough to do hot pursuit at Mach 2 they need to blink an eye and you would be gone.

In the end, every capability opens up the possibility of different tactics, each with its own pros and cons. It is the tactics that matter. If our tactics require Mach 2, the thunder will have it. If a customer's tactics require Mach 2, we would need to develop it for them.

Well, even though I bit troll bait about Mig-21 Bison, I am glad we got it out of our system for now.. :-)

On a related note, Per AC (R) Kaiser Tufail, even if a plane can technically achieve Mach 2 it is not a matter of pushing on the throttle. A flight has to be planned & executed carefully to go beyond Mach 2, otherwise a Mach 2 aircraft would probably go no higher than Mach 1.6-1.8.

Does JF-17 have similar issues in achieving its top speed? I suppose that information would not be publicly available.

I remember ACM specifically said those 8 and more.

In India CAG reports are Deliberately " cooked up and made up "
lol.

AESA is confirmed, issue is Helmet mounted display and fifth gen BVR
IRST is another issue but i would say less important than above
