Iranian Ground Forces | News and Equipment

Hey @PeeD is there any further news on Karrar tank? Or it is cancelled?

Karrar is one of the lucky cases where Army and IRGC accepted a defense ministry project and are all on boat.

Seems like someone influential pushed them to this project dispute the Armies beloved Zolfaghar project or as I called it "the wish that the Shah-time Challanger order comes ture"...
Very lucky case because the Zolfaghar would be way less cost-effective than the Karrar.

cost effective because we'll be using T-72 Chasses on the Karrar!!!
But overall both Zolfaghar & Karrar projects are programs that lack foresight for Iran's future armored battalion.

What Iran truly needs to do is to build and invest in a bunch of oven presses (Maybe heat up and press sheets of alloy into one peace) and design a multi section Chasse that can be easily interchanged where the designs and materials used for the top and side section of the chasse can easily be modified to be used for cheaper and lighter IFV/APC or heavier SP Artillery or whatever you may need which will allow you to mass produce the bottom sections, wheels, one or two types of engines,.... And any additional expense will make up for it in the long run once mass produced and you can mass produce a large portion of the spare parts needed for the chassis for a large portion of your heavy equipment in your armored battalion and ease battlefield maintenance with interchangeable parts and it also allows Iran to produce larger numbers in a shorter amount of time based on demand using less facilities which allows you to build better protected sites and better defend those sites.

Without depleted uranium armor and dpu shells, even an Abrams tank is a sitting duck. Just go see what is happening to export versions of it in yemen.

The Karrar project is a upgrade project to bring existing inventory (T-72) to modern battlefield performance. It would be a waste of money for Iran to let its huge T-72 inventory to just waste away to obscurity.

In next 5-10 years Iran can begin production for a next gen battle tank. Even US still hasn’t released its next gen battletank concept yet.

Furthermore, Tanks are the last thing on Iran’s mind because Tanks = land invasion.

A land invasion of Persian soil is highly unlikely. Even if it were to occur in next 10 years, then it wouldn’t matter what tank iran is fielding.

So yes Karrar is a great move

Karrar is mainly a focus on the turret, sensors, electronics,.... which has little to do with Chassis! And if you actually read the post you'll see that in no way am I suggesting that Iran build a Chassis that are restricted to Tanks! And 5 years is the minimum amount of time it would take to design something, built a prototype, test it, build a production model, test it and then build facilities for production hell they'll have to be lucky to get it going in 5 years! So it's most definitely not something that will happen anytime soon but it doesn't change the fact you need to start on it today!

Did Karrar ever get the T-90 2A46M-5 upgraded gun?
