Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is reported to have seized Indian ship, MT Desh Shanti, when the ship was on its way to India from Iraq carrying oil cargo. The ship is owned by Shipping Corporation of India, a government-owned entity. This development will have serious diplomatic repercussions because Iran, heretofore, was considered a friend of India despite India’s withdrawal from Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project under US pressure. India has built Chabahar seaport on Iranian coast near Pakistan’s China-built Gwadar Deep Sea Port. IRGC’s action could impact Indian economy because Iraq is the second largest supplier of crude to India after Saudi Arabia. Previously, Iran was the second largest oil supplier to India but oil imports from Iran was cut by India under international pressure..
The Iranian action has shocked the Indian establishment who could never imagine that Iran would resort to seizing an Indian ship carrying cargo so critical to Indian economy. The Times of India has reported that ship was detained in international waters in the Persian Gulf before being coerced into entering Iranian waters. Late Wednesday evening, the ship was on its way to the Bandar Abbas port, guided by the IRGC. Sources said Iran claimed to have detained the ship because it was polluting Iranian waters, but this is being seen as flimsy reasoning.
If Iran can detain Indian ship in the Strait of Hormuz, it indicates that Iranian authorities are planning to choke the waterway at will to show their displeasure over international sanctions. This will seriously affect the oil transport from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and other Gulf States. This could be a follow up on a warning voiced Iran's vice-president Mohammad Reza Rahimi in 2011 saying that "not a drop of oil'' would be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz if more sanctions were imposed on Iran.
