Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) News and Discussions

The engines are American and so will be lot of other components..can someone give details analysis about how much indigenous components are used in this ACC??

Does it really matters what components are foreign and what not. What matters is we will have Made in India tag on it with Indian Navies firepower on board to reeking havoc on whoever challenges them in Indian Ocean.

Rumors are IAC-3 might be Nuclear powered

IAC-3 might be nuclear powered Aircraft carrier

While at home work on IAC-1 which has been named INS Vikrant has been under construction for a while in Kochi which will be launched by 2012 and will be operational few years later, IAC-2 has already been told will be a CATOBAR aircraft carrier with 65000 ton and plans are there to operate Fixed wings aircrafts like AEW (HAWK EYE 2D) and also ASW aircrafts.

While IAC-3 which will be launched by 2018 and to be deployed by 2025 will be replacement carrier for INS Vikramaditya which will only have service life of 20 to 25 years when inducted by 2012 . Recent discussion with a serving naval officer has disclosed that nuclear propulsion might be used to power the third aircraft carrier.

Well, bozo
Barring Russia and USA ,no other countries ship can be classified as fully indigenous ,even chinese ships have some degree of Russian Equipment

As far as indian ships are concerned
Well , Navy's Shivalik class Frigate and Kolkata class Destroyers have around 65-70 % Indigenous content
With major foreign equipment being The engines and Barak SAMs

As far as IAC is concerned
Well, the ship was designed by Directorate of Naval Design , a govt of India institute
While Its hull is being built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd
Ski jump being built by L&T an indian engineering company
Most of the Internal systems were Built by Drdo and have already been incorporated in Shivalik and Kolkata class
The ship's firepower is expected to be at par with Kolkata Class Destroyer , with only difference being that the IAC will carry Nirbhay cruise Missile with a range of 1000 Km along with the usual Bramos Cruise Missiles which are the standard issue Anti ship missiles of Indian Warships being inducted in the last 10 Yrs

As far as total Indigenous level is concerned It is estimated that 80% of the total value of Carrier will comprise of Indigenous systems

Currently the IAC is estimated to cost Rs 5600 Cr ie 1.25 Billion USD
which is nearly Double the Original estimate of yr 2003 which was Rs 3000Cr or 700 Million USD
Even today many people in the defence establishment estimate that by the time the carrier actually enters service IN 2014 , it could cost Rs 7000 Cr or 1.6 Billion USD

Well India has No Prior Experiance in making Powerful Engines, Only the KMGT is there In Our Kitty and would not be enough to Power an Aircraft carrier.... And The rest, System would be developed and Integrated Most Likely By L&T Or BHEL or even Both, Ofcorse The Hull Lined up In Cochin Shipyard, and an Awkward Combination of Zink with Aluminium for Outer coating Developed By DRDO for It To survive in Salty waters....

IAC-1 gents

Nice, surprising the photographer was able to get these few pics- IN has put such important locations under heavy security (SPB) having been deployed some time back.

Another picture of IAC-1. Taken around April 14th. Pretty much anyone can see this....

Well from I know this is a temporary fix- the dry dock was needed for some other commercial product by the shipyard so for ashore period the IAC is in wet dock and being fitted with wiring and electronics and by September/Ausgust the IAC will return to dry dock to complete major superstructure work like ski-ramp and Island integration.

ok guys, can anyone give a summary of exact combat capabilities, and expected role for the iac ?

ie. exact radar and armament spec.
aircraft carried,
range etc

No, because nobody than IN knows the real specs so far. From what the media reported it will be in the same class as Gorshkov or French Charle de Gaulle carrier with around 40000t displacement, possibly carries around 30 fighters (N-LCA & Mig 29K) + additional naval and surveillance helicopters. The main roles will be similar to Gorshkov, Sea Control around Indias coastlines and power projection to the Arabian Sea / Persion Gulf, the Bay of Bengal / Straight of Malacca.
