Indian Navy to buy 80 interception boats from Lankan firm

5o knots is a pretty good speed. Any idea on ferry range?

. . .
How come Lankan Ranger was not the fastest gun in the PDF forum by posting this as another of his thread starter?

He is normally first with the news, though may not be first with the views.

The cigarette boats that ply in the Persian Gulf for smuggling are also capable to 50 knots. They skim the surface on full throttle and the spray is so stinging that it hurts.

All our shipyards are engaged in building and satisfying our defense needs... And More over buying from sri lanka is just a good will gesture to improve the diplomatic relations.

Agreed. This deal looks like like a goodwill move than any other else, on the otherhand which defense deal isn't. This can be seen in our MMRCA deal, where we have to get the best without antagonising any parties concerned.

I remember seeing in NGC a US Coast Guard Boat which is so stable that it cannot overturn even in the worst storms. Can anyone shed light on that. Thanks in advance.

These ship yards are making stealth frigates, stealth destroyers, etc.
I am sure they are not like the bigger interceptor ships India makes..

L&T shipyard in Katupalli is lying un-utilized (not even under-utilized) and I know that for a fact given that some of my room mates work in L&T ship building, Hazira.

Give them 5 or 10 ships as a gesture. But 80 ships ? At the cost of our shipyards and the employment of locals/local economy ? :hitwall:

I am sure they will also be cheaper than anything anyone can construct.

cheap labour.

80 ships since none will know if they are SL Navy or ours!!

Crew, weaponry,technical details please!

Essentially they are the Super Dvora FAC boats. It is a an Israeli design which is built in Sri Lanka under licence (for reasons of costs) These boats are already operated by the IN for quite some time and are used for patrol and quick infiltration and exfiltration of special teams. They are very fast craft with ASD (Arneson Stern Drive) units which can be rapidly swivelled and retracted, allowing exceptional shallow water capabilities. They are of GRP construction, and that is the reason that they are not being constructed by L&T and ABG etc. which are geared up to produce larger, metal-hulled craft (bot Aluminium alloy and Steel). In any case the Srilankan boatyard has been making them for some time already.

Lastly the 80 boats will carry numbers, so there will be no issues with having to find names for them; so no worries there either.

Sri Lankan firm won the contract due to the early delivery date, by 2014 December all 80 Fast Attack Crafts will be delivered to India.

Delivery Begins in 2012

Soon another Sri Lankan firm will export unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s) to Bangladesh.

Mind your Language!!!!

Speed-wise no difference between FACs and Cigarette boats. Material of construction (GRP) is also the same. Hull form (wave-riding, hard-chine) is also the same. Only the armament is different. :)
