An Indian man allegedly raped his ex-girlfriend with at least one other man and then drove her over with a car in an attempt to conceal her identity, police have said.
In the latest case of sexual violence against women to shock the country, the 20-year-old victim was allegedly kidnapped and drugged by her ex-boyfriend, named by Indian media as Sumit Kumar, and his friend.
Kumar and the other man, named only as Vikas, then allegedly raped and mutilated her, police in the northern state of Haryana said. There were reports that up to five other men were also involved in the attack.
The woman's head was smashed with bricks and the men then ran over her with a car in an attempt to hide her identity, police said. A post-mortem showed her skull was broken.
The body was found in a disused industrial area on Friday, four days after the attack. Stray dogs were surrounding the body.
"We have arrested two men under various sections - murder and rape also," Jagjeet Singh, spokesman for Sonipat city police in Haryana, told AFP.
"The main accused, Sumit, and she (the victim) were in a relationship but she didn't want to marry him."
Mr Singh said the victim's post-mortem report showed she had been drugged or sedated during the horrific attack.
Ashwin Shenvi, superintendent of police, said: "The way that they brutalised her is horrific."
The victim's father told NDTV: "She passed her Class 10 exams but couldn't continue her studies because we didn't have money. She started working as a packer in a pharmaceutical company where she earned about 4,000 rupees a month. I was proud that my daughter was helping out with the household finances."
Women's rights groups expressed outrage at the latest shocking rape and murder case in the country. Nearly 40,000 rape cases are reported in India every year, but the real number is thought to be significantly higher, with many victims too scared to come forward.
In 2012, Jyoti Singh, a medical student, was gang-raped and murdered on a Delhi bus, leading to mass protests across the country.
"This savage and bone-chilling incident has shocked the conscience of the nation, reminding each one of us about the crying need for revisiting the important issue of women's safety and security," said Sonia Gandhi, the opposition leader.
Haryana state chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar called the assault "unfortunate", according to the Press Trust of India.
