India has been ranked 121st among 157 countries in terms of progress in the realm of information and communication technology (ICT) in a newly-released report of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which makes an annual assessment based on a wide range of parameters and data.

The ranking has been made on the basis of an ICT Development Index (IDI), a benchmark made up of 11 indicators.

It comes in the wake of the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, in a recent report, ranking India 145th among nearly 200 countries in terms of the percentage of individuals using the Internet and 106th in the case of mobile broadband penetration.

Though India's IDI score had gone up from 2.13 in 2011 to 2.21 in 2012 in the report 'Measuring the Information Society 2013' released on October 7, its ranking declined from 120 to 121 during this period.

India's rankings in three sub-indexes which relate to access, skills and use, on which the IDI is based, are also in a similar range. In the skills sub-index, which evaluates ICT capability or skills in terms of indicators that include adult literacy as well as gross secondary and tertiary enrollment, India was ranked 117 in 2012, the same position it had occupied in 2011.

In terms of the use sub-index, which broadly measures the uptake of ICTs and the intensity of usage based on parameters such as Internet users per 100 inhabitants, fixed (wired)-broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, and wireless-broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, India has been ranked 121st, up from 124 in 2011.

And the access sub-index rankings place India in the 122nd position, down from 114 a year ago. This sub-index has to do with ICT readiness in terms of fixed-telephone subscriptions, mobile cellular telephone subscriptions, international Internet bandwidth per Internet user, percentage of households with a computer, and percentage of households with Internet access.

Among countries in the region, the report takes note of the gains Bangladesh has made, up by four places to 135th in the latest IDI, with maximum gains in the access sub-index.

The report includes India among a group of 39 least connected countries (LCCs) with low IDI 2012 values. "In these LCCs, most ICT access and use is limited to basic voice and low-speed data services. While a number of LCCs have reached relatively high levels of mobile-cellular penetration, more advanced ICT services, including broadband Internet access, remain very limited," the report said. Most of the countries in this group are the least developed ones in Africa.

Indian IT engineers lack basic skills: report

Around 30% of CS/IT graduates did not have basic theoretical concepts used in computer programming, while more than 50% did not understand the subtleties of programming concepts, and more than 80% were unable to apply them to real-world situations.

The report, surveyed 55,000 students from all engineering backgrounds across 250 engineering colleges in the country and the analysis was based on the computer-programming module of the Aspiring Minds Computer Adaptive Test, a standardised employability test.

“The rate of production of engineers in India is much greater than any other nation,” the report noted in its conclusion. “But the quality with regards to their programming ability is a matter of deep concern. The results obtained are eye-opening.”

The test looked at graduates’ basic knowledge, conceptual understanding and application skills. “Students’ competency in programming is very low,” said G Thampi, principal of Thadomal Shahani Engineering College in Bandra. “There is no effort in helping develop programming competency because of a lack of direction and out of date syllabus.”

Now African countries are being compared with India in terms of progress.....we should be really ashamed.....:ashamed:
If Indians don't realize immediately that we're actually going down due to our vote-bank politics, corruption, nepotism etc.....then I guess, the Pakistani and Chinese dream of seeing India disintegrated might become reality.....
Indians should remember, India has already been divided once due to political greed.....

So, what is your solution to solve the problem above?

Only typical that the Africans are now surpassing these people.

According to new data....

India performed well in 3 major categories in 11 categories... Mobile subscription, Internet,TV...... But India's low performance in list because of the big population....

Mobile-cellular telephone subscriptions 2012:India= 864,720,000 (Mighty USA=310,000,000)........
2001:India= 3,577,095(Mighty USA=109,478,031).......That means more than 400million mobile subscription in India than USA in 2012....
Individuals using the Internet India 150million (2012) from 5 million(2001)...USA 240 million from 130million... Here india adds 145 million and USA 110 million....
Tv: Above 500million.....

Fixed-telephone subscriptions 2012 india 30million from 40million in 2001....USA from 160million to 140million... The numbers are decreasing and USA has 120 million more land lines....

Wired broadband.... India from 85000(2001) to 14.3 million(2012)

Radio: India 200 million (2011)....

Computer: Above 100million....

No datas available in categories like Percentage of Internet users, by gender, latest year available, 2008-2012......

The US a 'distant' 17. Sure beats a distant 121st.

And tell me, who exactly are the other 16 countries? Fellow Westerners? Thought so.

The funny thing is, Korea at #1 never claimed to be an IT super power. Guess which braggadocio incessantly tells the world that it's an IT super duper power and that the USA is dependent on their super brainy IT techs graduating from IIT and what not. :cheesy:

Chinese IQ and cents army at work :omghaha:

It is like saying that miser chinese are the big spenders and good consumers of the world since they produce goods more than any country ....

If you compare the growth rates if the IT and communications set up that is going on in India. India is rapidly progressing.

These trolls they don't read the thread, they don't know the thing in the article, and then come here for discussion, pathetic logic and pathetic discussions .....

dumbest post ........this ranking does not have anything to do with "information tech services"....read what the article is about before trolling......the ranking is related to penetration of internet and telecommunication among the percentage of population....yes INDIA will lag in this because we have 1 billion(1/7 th of the worlds population) and providing good internet services is gonna a be really difficult......countries which have lesser population and good economy will top this because of the same reasons, its easier to provide high speed internet for them

Oh, look at those Indians. They don't even see the relationship of internet and other sources of modern communication to be part of IT. In their desperate attempt to save their face, they start to insult and bringing completely off topic matters into the discussion.

LOL

Face saving !? thats exactly you are doing by rediculing India. The next superpower china is nowhere close to the top 10, not even top 50. And china has more It & telecom companies than India. What are your Huwaei , ZTE doing !???

Man this is hilarious!! fellow westerners !!?? Your present location being US, doesnt make you westerner :omghaha:

You are a real chinese and a fake american. Coming from a country where they can fake anyhting, you are nothing. Worst things have come from china
