Imran Khan condemned US Pres Obama's unilateral decision to attack Syria

Imran Khan condemns Obama's stance on Syria

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan condemned US Barack Obama’s decision to consider carrying out a military strike in Syria on Monday.
A suspected chemical attack near Damascus on August 21 is said to have killed hundreds. The Syrian government has denied any involvement and has instead accused rebel forces for the attacks.
Khan said that the issue of whether the Syrian government used chemical weapons in the Damascus attacks needs to be investigated by UN inspectors and action taken on the basis of UN reports should be in accordance with United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
The PTI Chairman said, “the powerful cannot be allowed to break international norms with impunity”.
The US president said on Saturday he would seek congressional consent before taking military action against Damascus for its apparent use of chemical weapons.
Calling Obama’s decision to seek approval from Congress for military intervention an “internal political issue,” Khan said that it did not legitimise the strikes in front of the international community.
He added that Pakistan had also suffered at the hands of the military-intensive approach followed by the US in the form of drone strikes, which were illegal.
He said, “Secretary of State John Kerry’s declaration that Congressional approval was not required was a reflection of the militaristic policies displayed by the Obama Administration during its previous and present tenure in office.”
“It is time that international laws are respected,” Khan continued, adding that this was the only way to curb intra-state and inter-state conflicts.

PTI chief criticises US move to use force against Syria

Calling for a UN-sanctioned prescription to resolve the Syrian crisis, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has opposed America’s one-sided move to attack the country.

Condemning US President Barack Obama’s decision against Syria, Mr Khan said the allegation of use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime was being investigated by the UN inspectors and any action must be based on the report of these inspectors and according to the sanction of the UN Security Council.

“Unilateral military action against a sovereign member state of the UN is against the UN Charter and International Law and the powerful cannot be allowed to break these international norms with impunity,” said Mr Khan in a statement on Monday.

According to the PTI chief, President Obama’s decision to seek approval from the US Congress for a military action was an internal political issue of the country and not a source of “international legitimisation”.

“Even in that context, Secretary of State [John] Kerry’s declaration that congressional approval was not required was a reflection of militaristic policies displayed by the Obama administration during its previous and present tenure in office,” he said.

Mr Khan pointed out that Pakistan had suffered from this approach of the US in the shape of illegal drone attacks on Pakistani citizens.

“It is time to respect international law and collective security system as defined in Chapter VII of the UN Charter. This is the only way to protect the global community from intra-state and inter-state excesses and abuse,” he emphasised.

The government of Pakistan has supported a peaceful solution to the crisis.

Prime Minister’s Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz in a policy statement made before the National Assembly on Friday said: “As the US is preparing for aerial strikes within Syria, Pakistan believes that it will make the situation more concerning.”

At the same time Pakistan opposed the use of chemical weapons by any country, he added.

clearly a comprehension problem on your part. read again with a open mind.

secondly are you saying that usa invasion is a solution?

Instead of going for cheap personal attacks why don't you debate at a factual and intellectual level.

Or are you just a fan boy who does not have the intellectual ability to put together two sentences without resorting to childish vernacular.

you are running from pillar to post with no clue what to respond to your earlier claims and rants, say something solid. how following UN charter or international law is misguided policy? and even your comparison with taliban policy is flawed, I am sure you wont even be able to quote the policy correctly.

Actually, since Imran Khan is only an MNA, what he says is not official Pakistani State Policy, so it is not important. He can say whatever he wants that is irrelevant, since the government will do what is best for the country.

No, State policy is far more important, specially when Pakistan as a nation will need to make sure its foreign policy decisions serve its national interests as best as possible, personal opinions such as this aside.

Our state policy mostly doesnot represent "personal" opinion of millions which ofcourse you think has no value :D

The important thing to keep in mind is that our state policy must promote our national interests. As long as it does that, I have no problem whether it is shared by millions or not, or whether it is personal or consensual.

America is a war junkey. As Putin said 'America is behaving like a monkey with a granage in his hands.'

too vague talk. just leave it if you got nothing to say.

IK is doing the right thing here. When we find KSA and Israel in the same corner, and Iran supporting Syria despite its murderous regime, then we know for sure that the situation is a naked power game and that there are no principles involved. We should stay out. We will stay out of this one. Ultimately opressive Alawites are going to be thrown off. But it is for Syrians to decide and do as they see fit. Not us, or KSA, or USA, or anyone else.

I know PML-N will be diplomatic about it. They may shift with the wind a bit. But we are going to stay out of it. I am glad IK is taking a principled stand. And it sure helps that he is not in government.

Lastly, I wonder if IK is indeed making the right calls these days. I can not tell what is his strategy? He puts off participating in APC and has it postponed til who knows. And he makes no effort to get involved in meeting in and about Karachi. He seems to distance himself from initiatives for some reason. What is he betting on? Failure of PML-N? I have my doubts on this one.

Come on Khan sb show some leadership skills and engage with federal government. KPK is under threat, and Karachi is going to be your big ticket. Why waste time?
