Majority of kalash people were forcibly coverted by Afghan king abdul rehman and kafiristan was renamed as nooristan, present day 3 thousands kalash people are remnants of once kafiristan which was part of afghanistan and included chitral.

Historical kafiristan was a large region. Babur in baburnama mention that these kalash or kafir people also lived in bajaur. He killed all the "infidels" inhabitants of bajaur and built minars of their skulls. Later pashtuns migrated to this depopulated region. Once numerous kafirs are now reduced to few thousands, they have not survived, they are dying race.
